318181 tn?1336443496 m also considering starting to feed the cats more canned food (in addition to having the dry food available, since I probably won't be able to do all their meals that way). I've read that wet food is more filling and keeps them from eating as many calories as with dry food. Not sure how true that is, I just read it while doing some research online, but it might be worth a try... Thanks again!
Avatar n tn Although CRF can occur at any age, it is usually a disease of older cats. With dietary improvements in cat food, advances in feline medical care and more cats living indoors, cats are now living much longer and their bodies eventually wear out just as human bodies do. I lost a 12 year old Balinese to CRF last year. Condolences on your loss.
Avatar f tn at a grand age of 17 a kitty needs a very good diet, lots of protein and low on carbs(which most foods are loaded with) and Hyperthyroidism is very common especially in older cats...they do get a ravenous appetite yet continue to loose weight and waste away. your kitty really needs to have a good check up and his thyroid tested. here is a link with good info. good luck and keep us posted. http://www.catinfo.org/?
1742157 tn?1311083658 Thyroid, liver, or heart issues are not common in cats that young unless they are congenital or the result of trauma or previous illness. Pseudopreganancy is very rare, escpecially in spayed cats. When it does occur, it is the result of hormonal activity that is triggered by the release of unfertilized eggs into the uterus. Since your cat no longer has a uterus and/or overies, that cannot occur. Yes, there are diet cat foods for overwieght and older cats.
Avatar m tn s been a week, and she does not seem to be herself. She was romping with my other cats, and now seems completely disinterested in everything except sleeping. She liked playing with me and greeting me at the door, she's not doing that either. They told me to give it time, but would it take this long. She's eating well enough, but just not herself. I'm a little worried about her. Thank you.
Avatar f tn Both have been with us since 5 weeks old. For the past 6 months the younger cats will attack the older cat if they are bored or for what seems like no reason at all. The older cat has resorted to moving in slow motion when the others are around her, constantly growling and being stressed. But then they can go and sleep on the bed 2 feet from one another without fighting or hang around each other without tension.
Avatar n tn t be. Hyperthyroidism is quite common in cats older than 10 yrs. With proper management and monitoring, kitties live long and happy with this disease. As a side note if your kitty comes back hyperthyroid. There also is a treatment with radio-iodine. This treatment destroys part of the thyroid gland so it doesn't make too much of the hormone. I personally wouldn't do it with an older cat, but thats my opinion.
Avatar m tn It sounds like a UTI. The condition is more accurately called Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease and can be serious, especially if not treated right way. There are other possibilities, like bladder stones or kidney problems, but most likely, she'll need a course of antibiotics and that's that - these bladder infections are very common and very treatable.
506791 tn?1439842983 Charity was rescued a couple months ago by a friend of BCR from the front porch of a fellow who hated cats. Her eyes were in bad shape and she has just had the final surgery to close up the eye sockets. In the videos from the room in which she now lives with other cats, what an active kitten who does not know she is blind. I'm sponsoring them in memory of all our kitties who had a good home and people who cared for them.
1563533 tn?1345366296 I have always had houseplants and my cats never seemed to care. My cats, however, were indoor-outdoor cats. I think cats require an outside life, unlike dogs whose life is with their masters.
1232362 tn?1333135406 This am my 12 yr old spayed female, Spirit, began going back to her litter pans over and over w/no visible result. She seems fine otherwise-good appetite, no apparent pain, responds to laser play, usual impatience w/ other 2 younger cats. I have a vet appt first thing in am for what we're surmising is cystitis; is there anything i can do to keep her more comfy till then?
Avatar f tn If they are outside....they are more active. In the house... they seem more likely to lay around, or is it lie around? Maybe they are bored or more relaxed, either case I think it's normal . If they are not having any "sick" symptoms they are, in all likelihood, just fine. I've found that when they get older they sleep even more.
798555 tn?1292787551 I brought up one of your older posts , july '15, about Fluconazole and thyroid level. -Did your thyroid return to past levels after Flucon use ended? -Or did this permanently raise (fast forward) your thyroid production (or thyroid med) need?
514349 tn?1272801633 Two weeks ago, I had one of my 16 year old cats to the vet. She palpated a mass in his abdomen and couldn't tell if it was a tumor or something that would pass (if you get my drift). She suggested I wait a while and bring him back to see if it was still there. The follow-up was this morning and the vet's assistant (trainee) indicated that the mass was still there and said it was likely lymphoma. She advised that an ultrasound was in order to properly diagnose the issue.
Avatar f tn Have you had your vet check your cat for hypothyroidism? This is not uncommon in cats especially cats like yours that weigh 28 pounds! As a practicing veterinarian for many years I have seen this in a handful of cats with signs similar to yours. Checking your cats thyroid status involves a simple blood test your vet can take and send to the lab. If the test is positive your vet will give you a product to correct this.
Avatar f tn With some cats accepting a new cat in the house can take some time. Generally they sort it out themselves. The more you intervene, the longer the problem sticks around because they have to work it out between themselves. Obviously, if the older cat is really beating up the younger one, you should stop it, but spitting and growling are a way of telling each other where they stand in the hierarchy.
Avatar f tn they are both females and fixed.. Prissy once in a while will play but smokey is more active. Is there something I am doing wrong that one has more energy then the other? Also prissy rips her fur out in clumps abd I have to yell at her to stop and when your not watching she does it again leaving balding spots. Please help with my questions as I want my cats to be healthy and happy..

691935 tn?1421027090 I would also definitely find out from the vet if the thyroid medication needs to be changed or adjusted, in case it is responsible for the lack of appetite.
Avatar m tn The only thing that has changed in the household in the past month is her older sister got a kitten that was diagnosed with tapeworms and ringworm. Could either of these two things cause my daughters headache and vomiting? She is not sexually active so she is not pregnant.
Avatar m tn t know if it is marking, or incontince) He does use the litter box so i dont know what is going on - looking for a different vet than we have used in the past - someone who will work with us - we have 3 cats...????? Avatar f tn I have a senior cat she's is 16 yrs old be 17 in Aug she's is very skinny weights 4 1/2 pounds she's is a tiny cat. She's eats, poops, pees, plays with her toys but I been noticing she's has been drinking a lot of water and peeing alot. Should I be concerned?.? And is it when cats get older they get skinner?
Avatar n tn When we went on trips, the cats stayed home in the care of a very good pet sitter. Lillie has spent her whole life with her brother around. Since her brother is no longer here, she has been very clingy to us. We are worried about her being lonely when we are at work, and especially when we go away on for week long trips. We were wondering if it is a good idea to get a male kitten to be a companion for her. Any thoughts from anyone?
1460724 tn?1285932386 Since your cat is 12 yrs old, there are health conditions that are common(TOO common, if you ask me) in older cats. Some of the conditions are hyperthyroid disease and diabetes, and they go along with hunger and losing weight-especially, hyperthyroid disease. With diabetes, you'll also see excessive drinking and urinating. Please, before assuming that your cat is not getting enough to eat, take her to the vet first to rule out the other conditions. Take care!
1296191 tn?1280699873 get the blood work, older cats can develop thyroid problems my very healthy and spry 20 year old cat was diagnosed with it about a year ago. She takes 1/2 pill twice a day along with 1/4 of a pepcide a/c (over the counter generic acid reducer) vomiting stop almost completely.
Avatar f tn My cat, who is now about 14 years old and still pretty active, is always hungry, no matter how much we feed her. She's really skinny too, she's been de-wormed but it hasnt seemed decrease her hunger at all.
