I have had GERD for years. I went from Aciphex to Protonix and now Nexium. I have recently had a B-12 count toward the low level (but still in normal range) and am concerned that this is because of the medication. I also heard that the medication can cause stomach cancer. Is using the medication for so long safe? Is there a timframe for which it should be stopped? Also, I recently heard about Kapidex.

Has anyone tried Zegerid? So far I have tried Prevacid, Aciphex, Prilosec,Protonix, and Nexium. Aciphex gave me bad side effects and Nexium made my reflux symptoms worse. Prilosec did absolutely nothing for me. I was successfully treated for H. Pylori in Nov 07. Since then I have been suffering from Water Brash and now heartburn. I don't know where to turn. My GI now wants me to take Zegerid(isn't this med just like Prilosec with sodium?).

to the point where I would wake up in the middle of the night gasping for breath with a mouthful of acid. I was on Aciphex first, then Protonix and now Nexium. My problem is that the back of my tongue is all white and bumpy (looks a bit like thrush). I was told that this is from the acid that has come up over the years. Is that likely? If so, is there anything I can do to remove it (treatment, over-the-counter remedy, medication, etc.)? Thanks for the help!

I started taking 25 mgs. of synthroid on Sept. 4th, and right away I've had relieve from a lot of my symptoms, including indigestion & heartburn. Probably is the placebo effect. Either way I'm still symptom free except for the heartburn, that's actually worse than before taking synthroid. I am having it all day. Therefore, I'm not sure if the synthroid is the cause or if it may be caused from me drinking my morning coffee without taking the protonix.

aciphex, otc omeprazole, protonix, prevacid, nexium, prilosec, and zantac (and maybe more that I'm forgetting). They do nothing for me! Some help a little more than others. My doctors keep brushing me aside and I can't eat or breathe! I can't even lay on my side at night, I have to prop up on my back with pillows. Also, my father and aunt have severe Crohn's Disease and ileostomies. My dad just recently died of unknown causes and my aunt is on a daily feeding IV.

I have posted in the pain management forum, but not in this one yet. I've been having bad neck and shoulder and shoulder blade pain on the right side for a few months. I have been taking Protonix since May, 40mgs once every evening. Because I'm not getting relief with chiropractic care or anything else for that matter, I started thinking about medication and side effects. The protonix s the only thing that could possibly be the culprit.

ve got to go for the big guns in the form of PPIs (proton pump inhibitors) like aciphex, nexium, protonix, etc., and since they're prescription meds, you have to see a doctor.

When I thought back to all my times on Protonix or Aciphex, I can DEFINITELY tell you there is a correlation. I have extreme acid, so I've tested this over the last few months. Every single time I start one of these, my PVCs become much worse. When I posted I got a lot of responses that the same thing happened to others. Now I just take after-the-fact drugs like Zantac, tums, and Gaviscon. Nothing I can do. I had to decide which I hate worse.

4 PPIs: Nexium, Prevacid, Aciphex, Protonix; 2 H2blockers: Zantac and Pepcid; 2 antiacids: Gaviscon and Riopan. I couldn't take any of these more than a few days (from 1 to 13 days) because of their side effects. The 2 bad side effects I've most often had are: worsened IBS - bad abdominal cramps (caused by Nexium together with fever and Zantac) a white-coated and burning tongue (caused by Prevacid, Zantac, Protonix, Pepcid, Riopan).

The heartburn got frequent and severe enough to seek medical attention . They put me on aciphex and did a gastoscopy , finding just an irritated stomach lining . Ever since then I have had nothing but tons of epigastric pain and into my back . They switched me to protonix 40mg twice a day but I have minimal relief . Also had my gallbladder removed about 4 yrs ago . Any ideas ? Please Help !!!

My GI switched me to Nexium because Aciphex gave me terrible side effects and Protonix made my water brash symptoms ever worse. I have tried Prilosec in the past and it didn't have much of an effect for me. I'm just wondering what else I can do to alleviate my water brash symptoms. It has been on-going for more than three months. I can pretty eat anything I want(coffee, wine and pizza etc,etc) and my symptoms do not get better or worse after I eat.

If it does not relieve your symptoms, get a GI consult and ask them to do an endoscopy if indicated. It could be a hiatal hernia, but its a stretch. Id bet GERD 99%.

Even though medicines like nexium, prilosec, prevacid, protonix, aciphex, and dexilant are all very similar, sometimes you need to try many of them before you find one that works well for you. The nausea could be caused by the GERD. Are you on a GERD-friendly diet? Have you tried raising the head of your bed?

Before she even went to the hospital she was being seen by a GI dr in California that ran some exams on her one being an endoscopy and got the same result as from the hospital, but this Dr from california put her on Aciphex which in my opinion made her even worse. The Dr. in Arizona Aciphex should be working. My wife has been taking Aciphex for 1yr and a half and it was not doing anything for her, if anything her condition was getting worse.

I was just wondering if anyone else had this symtom while or after taking a proton pump inhibitor. It may not be from the medicine but it was odd that it only started after taking the medicine. I stopped taking the medicine after 2 weeks to see if it helps make the lump in throat go away.

I have been taking protonix for about 5 years now and I'm concerned about long term use of protonix and all the other heartburn medications I have been taking for 30 years. I still suffer from heartburn daily. I have had 4 Endoscopy's done at different times and my Dr. say's it does show some inflammation but no Barrett's Desease, thank God.

ve been taking Prilosec during the past month or so to get my symptoms under control. It works quite well for me. I have never taken Prevacid before. Are these two the same thing? Can I use Prilosec to substitute the Prevacid in the pack? I'm scared of stopping Prilosec as my symptoms always get worse when I tried to wean myself off the drug in the past. I'm also horrified by the idea of combined antibiotics for extended time.

Along with it you can try over the counter antacids. Avoid heavy meals. Avoid too much of caffeine, tea, fried food and drinks both alcoholic and non alcoholic fuzzy ones. Avoid heavy exercises within 4 hours of a heavy meal. Raise the head end of the bed or raise pillows to 30 degrees. Go to bed at least 2 hours after food.

I have tried Nexium and Prilosec long-term, and also spent a few weeks using Aciphex and Protonix. All the results were pretty much the same. Maybe I needed to use the others longer term, or try using Prevacid as well. I have tried a form of the elimination diet to no avail. I've heard it is hard to diagnose food intolerance because it can take weeks and months without a certain food to get the effects out of your system. I don't really get light-headed or fatigued.

prevazid did not work..nexium did not work..aciphex did not work..only the protonix but the expensive one..i should be so lucky...my insurance just only cover some money but not the complete total..but well it's ok..i don't know is protonix is giving me all those side effects...i take gasviscon just one tea spoonfull in the night...i sleep with big pillows...i try to tell my doctor to give me other endocoscopy and he think that i'm crazy..but i really need that...they made sonograms.

My husband was originally on Aciphex, but placed on Nexium after our insurance stopped covering aciphex and he was miserable. Aciphex has always worked so much better for him. Finally, after a year of misery he's back on aciphex and so much happier. I hope it works as well for you.

I connect a straight line between the taking of aciphex and the development of GERD. Is this a reasonable conclusion? or is there some other more likely explanation?
