Without intending to sound like a conspiracy theorist, PPIs are probably the 2nd highest grossing class of drugs with 10s of billions of dollars in annual sales, to patients, most of whom DO NOT need to take them!

I belch a lot and I take 3-4 Tums a day, sometimes the Tums help other times they do not. I have also been having a burning sensation lower, around my belly button and lower. I have tried a lot of medications (Pepicd, Zantac, Prilosec, Aciphex and now Nexium). None have really helped that much.

Stupidly I had chicken parm, bruchetta and ziti last night, finishing it off with apple pie and ice cream. While it was yummy in the tummy, it wasn't for long. I woke up around midnight with the worst heartburn. I didn't have anything but TUMS and I ended up taking around 12 of those over the course of the night and still suffered! I know we're not supposed to take antiacids like tums because of their reaction with Ribavirin, but I had to take something.

I was told I can take them just at least three hours apart from the Riba. Hepatologist had me on Aciphhex and now Prilosec.

Diane just asked if Pepsid was the same this is the response: Jmjm had the worst case of GERD out of just about anybody on the forum and he said these are ok - it's the same thing copyman said so I guess it's perfectly fine just stay away from Tums and Mylanta and Maalox and those things! Just don't take Pepsid complete!

RNRita - I'm worried about going off because it really did help. I used to use Gaviscon but it stopped working. I have been on Protonix for quite a while so maybe I will stop and see if I can have luck with Gaviscon and Tums again. Did the pvc's stop right away as soon as you went off it? WIsconsin2007 - I don't see any literature with palps as a side effect either and my cardio gave them to me and told me it wouldn't bother my heart. But I have to wonder....

well I am going to see my GI doc monday.. I have GERD and was taking AcipHex but had to stop when I found out I was pregnant.. so I am hoping it is just severe GERD related to that.. however, my lower back (flank, both sides) )is hurting more this morning, where the kidneys are.??? I am just wondering if the 2 can be related.. took pepto bismol last night and that seemed to help the stomach pain a little, but not completely... thanks for input!

I connect a straight line between the taking of aciphex and the development of GERD. Is this a reasonable conclusion? or is there some other more likely explanation?

I've had continual discolored stool (yellow, green, orange, black) for years along with daily movements anywhere from 3-6 times. This has been quite "regular" for me but when asking doctors about this they say it is normal or disregard my concerns. However, I do not feel that it is "normal".

Clearly something changed after taking the antibiotics, and now your ally in heartburn control has become your enemy. It might be worth getting back to your physician on this one, since antibiotics can often be a "swinging door", killing some bacteria while making it easier for other bacteria to get through that otherwise wouldn't have.

I tried aciphex, which worked great for about 6 months, then stopped working. I switched to taking tums multiple times a day, which worked for a couple months and then stopped. I tried Kapidex which also worked perfectly for about 3 months and then completely stopped working. Zantac worked for about a month and is now subsiding. My doctor has added carafate, but the pains are still not gone. They usually come when I haven't eaten for a while and let myself get hungry at all.

My husband was originally on Aciphex, but placed on Nexium after our insurance stopped covering aciphex and he was miserable. Aciphex has always worked so much better for him. Finally, after a year of misery he's back on aciphex and so much happier. I hope it works as well for you.

I took Zantac as needed the first week or so, then switched to TUMS and Gaviscon (beware of constipation). I am reflux and pain free now for almost 2 weeks. I travelled last week and didn't even pack antacids. I've lost 18# in 2 months and have started running again. I have reintroduced tomato, citrus, egg white, and decaf coffee without any problems. I feel much more in tune with my body. I actually like having the feedback of a little reflux to keep my eating in check.

I had acid reflux 6 years ago and went to my primary care doctor the next day and she told me my stomach lining was irritated due to so much stress...I was prescribed Aciphex which is actually safe during pregnancy and told to take rolaids when needed...I was told don't lay down after eating and stop eating three hours before bed...I healed which was great and I actually had it two nights ago now that I'm 27 weeks pregnant and it was because I ate and went to sleep an hour after that...

Recently it seems that I have been (burping even more often) My throat is tight often hurts to talk sometimes and I cough a lot (this has been going on for a while but I did not know what it was and did not ask a doctor about this. I have actually been on some form of reflux med for a bit longer than 5yrs and started with Prilosec OTC, then prescription Prilosec, Nexium, Aciphex, and briefly Prevacid. These days I tend to take whatever I have in my medicine cabinet (Aciphex or Prevacid) twice a day, max dosage, and occasionally a tagamet to help out. I have a hiatial hernia that is going to be fixed soon so I am hoping to get off the meds and that the side effects will eventually go away...I hope.

Since then I am taking Acid suppressants such as Nexium and Aciphex as prescribed by my doctor. I also underwent Endoscopy and Biopsy, Abdominal Ultrasound, X-Ray and Blood test . All the tests came normal except they found H-Pilory infection and I took antibiotics and subsequent Stool test for H-Pilory showed negative. I am still having all the above discomforts which is going on for 5 months. I normally eat very healthy and I am following a strict diet since this problem started.

I was diagnosed with mild esophagitis caused by GERD. I was put on Aciphex. I was also diagnosed with hiatal hernia during endoscopy. I already knew I had one because an upper GI series 6 years ago detected it. Even so, the doctor who performed the endoscopy, sent me to get another more current upper GI series. The results came back “no obvious hiatal hernia”, even though the endoscopy showed one and the upper GI series from 6 years ago did too.

This is my third pregnancy and I always get brutal heart burn and acid reflux and have tried everything and nothing has worked well other than this. This works much better than baking soda in water and the taste is much easier to get used to! I have read that it has to be this brand because it is natural and organic and such, you need to get it from a health food or natural food store. Other kinds might work just as well but I didn't want to risk getting something that didn't work.

My doc told me to take Zantac once before bed and once when I wake up and to take tums with calcium in between. I also find that drinking a lil bit of sprite helps because it makes me burp and it relieves a lot of the burning and uncomfortable pain.

My SIL also said Maalox, the liquid kind, works really, really well, maybe try that instead of tums? It's OTC and safe to take while pregnant, I think it lasts longer, too. Did tums work for you? They didn't work for me at all.

I also take pepcid for heartburn, way better than eating chalk and it works like a dream! Call your doctor and double check to make sure it's fine for you to start taking it!

I found peppermint gum/mints helped sooo much better and had a longer lasting effect. Actually nothing helped me but that and small snacks.

ve had the morning sickness and heartburn the whole pregnancy. But its gotten so much worse now and idk why.
