Isotretinoin is a teratogen and is highly likely to cause birth defects if taken during pregnancy. A few of the more common birth defects that this drug can cause are hearing and visual impairment, missing earlobes, facial dysmorphism, and mental retardation. Isotretinoin's use is contraindicated in pregnancy.
Maybe not as severe side effects but the overall impression I am getting is that Accutane is more effective and if closely monitored, safer. Is this true? My doctor didnt give me the impression that there was much I needed to be worried about. All I was told was to take it with a full glass of water 2x a day. Are there severe side effects that I need to worry about while taking this antibiotic?
There are many differing opinions on when the risk of birth defects minimizes after stopping accutane. Her Dr. will likely monitor her very very closely and check for any malformations. When I worked at a blood bank any person that had taken accutane within the previous year was not allowed to donate blood, because of the risk of that blood being given to a pregnant woman.
I would talk to your doctor about it. That medicine can cause severe or life-threatening birth defects if the mother takes the medication during pregnancy. I would also get on some form of birth control because even just one dose can cause the defects. There's a number you can call if you become pregnant while taking it. Accutane has alot of varied side-effects, but some people don't have adverse reactions. my girlfriend had taken accutane and didn't have any stomach reactions but part of the accutane contract requires birth control regardless of activity. But I know my gf's opinion i: " Accutane is great" It worked for her really well for acne, and she didn't exhibit negative side effects from it.
My 14 year old son has severe acne on his face, chest and back. He has been seeing a dermatologist for over a year now. He has tried every over the counter medication out there as well as antibiotics (2 different kinds and several different MGs), 6 different prescription acne creams/gels. They seem to work for a little while then stop. Right now his skin is really bad-his face is covered in large, red bumps with white heads. His back is bad too-but to a lesser degree.

I think your other half posted a few days ago. I have been gone for a day or two, so am answering all the questions today--sorry for the delay. When I did the math for you two, it came out OK. (For the long answer--read the earlier post). I think your baby has NOT been exposed to the accutane. I did suggest a first trimester ultrasound for reassurance though. I don't think you are obliged to terminate for fear of birth defects--luckily.
However, this and other side effects wore off as my body got used to the medication. I had no side effects, except for dry lips, from 12 weeks onwards and took Accutane for 24 weeks.
Side effects are generally dose related. Taking Accutane at the recommended dose for 16 to 24 weeks is your son's best hope of a long term remission from acne.
The recommended dose is between 0.5 and 1mg x kg bodyweight per day. So your son should take between 30mg and 60mg per day because he weighs about 60kg.
So far, lawsuits have focused on Accutane and birth defects, depression and suicide, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Eg: "Accutane Lawsuit: Andrew McCarrell Wins $25 Million After Having Colon Removed." No mention of Accutane associated with hypothyroidism. Good thing you only took the drug for three days.

Im a 26 years old and may be 4 - 6 weeks pregnant. I have done a couple of home pregnancy test which all tested positive. My OB/Gyn appointment is not until next week. My husband is currently taking Accutane and had been on the medication for 4 months and counting. I've read that while taking Accutane, women are strictly advised against getting pregnant as it causes serious birth defects. Is it the same case for man taking Accutane?
I am so worried about him being on this medication. There are so many reported side effects with this, I wonder what the percentage of people experience these side effects. Why would his back be hurting. What exactly is the Claravis doing to his back?

Thanks for writing in.
First of all, please remember that the effects and side effects of accutane will last only for 6 months. So you don't need to bother about it too much.
Side effects like dryness of eyes occur only while you are accutane and not after many months of withdrawal of drug.
The flushing in your case may be due to acne rosacea which could concomitantly occur with acne vulgaris or after many months.
Is this documented that Accutane does cause premature epiphyseal closure? If so why is this drug being prescribed and why isn't this on the long list of side effects. My son was on this and he has not grown since, or while taking it. He was just past his 14th birthday when he took it. His acne was severe and it is also now back. It did clear up for a short time. He is only 5, 5.
I started typing in about accutane and growth and have come up with a long list of concerncs about growth.
If you call and find an OB they can get you in for an ultrasound if you explain what you were taking, but to be honest I have no idea what that med is. I was taking migraine prevention meds til I found I was pregnant at 5wks. I'm sure your baby is fine.
It is said that accutane causes birth defects,but you never know. Don't let your partner decide for you if to keep that baby or not. A baby is a blessing and that is a decision you should make on your own.
