Common Questions and Answers about Accutane permanent side effects

accutane

Avatar m tn I am at odds end about what to do because I am afraid about having long term, permanent eye problems and other side effects from this drug. I have a few questions: Is it normal to still be breaking out at the beginning of month 5 on accutane? How heavily do you believe that in order to acheive permanent remission that you have to take a high enough cumulative dose based on your body weight because I am not going to come anywhere close to this based on my weight and dose?
Avatar m tn Hello, I am a 20 year old male and have been taking accutane (claravis) for about 5 months now. I am taking two 40mg pills twice a day... I have experienced a few annoying side effects but one of the major ones i have noticed is hair loss. I had very thick hair pre-accutane and i noticed hair-thnning lately and my hairline as also been receding. This is driving me crazy. Will this be a permanent side-effect or temporary and will my hair come back to its original hair-line.
Avatar m tn I am reading about some of the side effects and it is scaring me. Could I develop some of these serious side effects, my eczema has been pretty bad since then, lots of bad flare ups all over my body (is this a direct result of taking the accutane)? I also have very bad gas and my symptoms match that of Irratible bowle syndrome, is this a direct result of the accutane? Please help.
Avatar n tn Accutane can have some rather nasty GI side-effects in some people. Please make sure that you're completely tested to rule out any of the more serious side-effects.
Avatar n tn However, this and other side effects wore off as my body got used to the medication. I had no side effects, except for dry lips, from 12 weeks onwards and took Accutane for 24 weeks. Side effects are generally dose related. Taking Accutane at the recommended dose for 16 to 24 weeks is your son's best hope of a long term remission from acne. The recommended dose is between 0.5 and 1mg x kg bodyweight per day. So your son should take between 30mg and 60mg per day because he weighs about 60kg.
Avatar n tn Hello, Accutane is known to cause hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation but these side effects are not permanent. You seem to be having post inflammatory hypopigmentation since it is occurring after bumps. Although this type of skin problem is very difficult to treat, but you can try Elidel cream or Protropic ointment on these hypopigmented areas. But use them after a dermatologist’s guidance.
Avatar f tn Accutane results in long-term remission rather than a permanent cure and a second or third course may be indicated for about 20% of patients. Please read my advice on the Acne Forum, and read my Roaccutane journal.
Avatar n tn I am so worried about him being on this medication. There are so many reported side effects with this, I wonder what the percentage of people experience these side effects. Why would his back be hurting. What exactly is the Claravis doing to his back? This discussion is related to Accutane- side effect - joint ache.
Avatar f tn Is this documented that Accutane does cause premature epiphyseal closure? If so why is this drug being prescribed and why isn't this on the long list of side effects. My son was on this and he has not grown since, or while taking it. He was just past his 14th birthday when he took it. His acne was severe and it is also now back. It did clear up for a short time. He is only 5, 5. I started typing in about accutane and growth and have come up with a long list of concerncs about growth.
Avatar n tn Can you please tell me if the effects of vaginal dryness after accutane are permanent. I've been on it for 6 months and finished my course yesterday. But 3 days ago I had stimulation and sex and it was dry down there and the sex hurt. I've never experienced this I'm 22 and really worried it won't go away. Answers appreciated.
Avatar m tn For back pain and other side effects of Accutane, people have found the supplements to take to counteract these side effects: Here are some posts from the internet: "Anyway, the maintenance dose works, but after a year and a half of taking Accutane I was becoming less tolerant of the side effects of even a maintenance dose (headaches, excessive dryness, etc.). Well, I have managed to combat the headaches and excessive dryness by increasing my Vitamin E intake from 400-800 I.U.
Avatar n tn Hello, Cheilitis and dry lips and nasal passages are common side effects of accutane and are usually dose related. On discontinuing this medicine, this usually goes away but may persist in some individuals. Avoid licking the lips as saliva evaporates quickly resulting in them being drier than before. Drink plenty of water and take multivitamin supplements and do not apply lipstick or other cosmetic products for some days.
Avatar n tn Accutane has alot of varied side-effects, but some people don't have adverse reactions. my girlfriend had taken accutane and didn't have any stomach reactions but part of the accutane contract requires birth control regardless of activity. But I know my gf's opinion i: " Accutane is great" It worked for her really well for acne, and she didn't exhibit negative side effects from it.

Avatar f tn to get this toxin out of my body. I pray everyone who is suffering from accutane side effects can get their healthy lives back. because its not worth suffering body pains for the rest of your life to get clear skin! Advice for those who are going to take accutane! it might be a wonder drug for some people but also on the other hand it might not work for some. if you are feeling any pains(or side effects) due to the drug. don't neglect them.
Avatar m tn Dear quan31 , Thanks for writing in. First of all, please remember that the effects and side effects of accutane will last only for 6 months. So you don't need to bother about it too much. Side effects like dryness of eyes occur only while you are accutane and not after many months of withdrawal of drug. The flushing in your case may be due to acne rosacea which could concomitantly occur with acne vulgaris or after many months.
Avatar m tn Discuss with your dermatologist. If you don't want to accept the possiblity of those side effects then don't take the medications. All medications have side effects. Each year several thousand people bleed to death from aspirin. One person's cure is another person's side effect. The only people that would have you believe that if a side effect occurs the doctor or the pharmaceutical company did something wrong are trial lawyers.
Avatar m tn I have been on Accutane ( Claravis) on 40 mg for a month, I was upped to 60 mg but just went back down do to side effects. My vision has gotten blurry in the distance and I recently visited my optometrist and told him this and that I was on the drug. He took a paper with all the visual side effects of Accutane and checked me for everything even threw in a glaucoma exam and tear producing test and said everything was normal.
546892 tn?1214525401 Before begining treatment with Accutain, an individual should discuss about his condition with the health care provider for the possible accutane benefits and side effects in order to get it clear whether the treatment is right. Accutain is used in the treatment of the severest of acne cases which haven't responded to all other types of acne treatments.
Avatar n tn As a patient with MS, you can expect to have the same risks and side effects as other people on accutane, and these side effects and risks need to be discussed with you by your dermatologist before you start taking it. However, I would also run this by your neurologist who manages your MS just to make sure he/she feels that accutane may affect your MS in some way. Thank you for this opportunity to answer your questions, I hope you find the information I have provided useful, good luck.
Avatar n tn Hi, Accutane is an isotretinoin, may indeed cause such rash (including facial erythema, seborrhea, and eczema) as a side effect. Effects are usually dose related ( dependent on the dosage applied). Aside from the rash, other observed side effects include: alopecia , bruising, dry mouth, dry skin, flushing, fragility of skin, hair abnormalities, hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation, pruritus, abnormal wound healing ( ref: http://www.rxlist.com/accutane-drug.htm).
