Common Questions and Answers about Accutane and long term effects

accutane

Avatar n tn The thing is my mom is a bit scared because of what she has heard about the possible long term effects of accutane. Is it true that the drug can cause serious liver damage etc? I am aware of the short term effects of accutane (chapped lips, blured vision etc) but can someone enlighten me on what can possibly happen in the long run with my health after i take this drug?
Avatar n tn Hi, I actually just took 5 months of accutane and finished a couple months ago. You are fine to keep working out, nothing wrong with that. You shouldn't gain weight either. And there shouldn't be long term side effects. It's rare that you will have major side effects, or hear voices. There are some studies that say some people kill themselves while on this medicine, but if you don't get depressed then you have nothing to worry about.
Avatar n tn Hi, A daily oral intake of vitamin A derivative isotretinoin (marketed as Accutane) over a period of 4-6 months can cause long-term resolution or reduction of acne. It is believed that isotretinoin works primarily by reducing the secretion of oils from the glands, however some studies suggest that it affects other acne-related factors as well. Isotretinoin has been shown to be very effective in treating severe acne and can either improve or clear well over 80% of patients.
Avatar m tn I am at odds end about what to do because I am afraid about having long term, permanent eye problems and other side effects from this drug. I have a few questions: Is it normal to still be breaking out at the beginning of month 5 on accutane? How heavily do you believe that in order to acheive permanent remission that you have to take a high enough cumulative dose based on your body weight because I am not going to come anywhere close to this based on my weight and dose?
Avatar m tn I am reading about some of the side effects and it is scaring me. Could I develop some of these serious side effects, my eczema has been pretty bad since then, lots of bad flare ups all over my body (is this a direct result of taking the accutane)? I also have very bad gas and my symptoms match that of Irratible bowle syndrome, is this a direct result of the accutane? Please help.
Avatar m tn ve just been recently prescribed by my dermatologist Isotretinoin (accutane) and am on my 4th day of treatment. After doing extensive research on how accutane affects growth, it really concerns me as I'm currently only 16 years and 8 months old and hence am still in the growing stage of my life. My dermatologist however has prescribed me a very low dosage of 10mg per day for 7 consecutive days, after which would be switching onto a 30mg PER WEEK dose.
Avatar m tn This means i did not complete the 6 month treatment. Right now i have been off accutane for 2 months and a half.Right now i have occasional pimples but nothing great like before. My face is getting back to its normal greasy self.I have many embarrassing scars on my face, My question is, is it okay to have laser treatment on my face or microdembrasion or do i suffer the possiblilty of having my acne scars worse than they are now?
Avatar f tn Accutane results in long-term remission rather than a permanent cure and a second or third course may be indicated for about 20% of patients. Please read my advice on the Acne Forum, and read my Roaccutane journal.
Avatar n tn Accutane must be taken for at least 16 weeks and provides a long term remission from acne in 80% of cases. It has many potential side effects but this must be balanced against the fact it can help people with severe nodular or cystic acne. Hope this is helpful, Eloise.
Avatar n tn today and he said that he believed it was indeed from the accutane and dryness it causes and advised I stop using accutate! Well 2 months into this I hate to stop now. I have used everything from creams, lotion, neoaspiren and nothing makes it go away but it does soothe the pain. I have an appointment with my dermatologist on Friday and am going to see what she says. After reading this site I have the EXACT thing as described above so I feel much better that it is from the Accutane.
Avatar m tn Hello, It is true that accutane has plenty of side effects. It may cause cheilitis and dry lips but thinning of skin and hair loss are less frequent side effects. From your symptoms first of all hypothyroidism should be ruled out. The second possibility to be ruled out is of vitamin D deficiency.
Avatar n tn I've only been on Accutane (actually, a generic brand of it) for ten days, and I experienced my first migraine on day 9. I am unsure if the migraine could be connected to Accutane, but I did a little research and some instances of migraines have been reported by Accutane users. I am just uncertain because I haven't been on it very long, but I am already experiencing dry lips, so I suppose I could be experiencing other side effects already, too.
Avatar n tn Hi, Accutane can cause blurred vision, sudden and severe headache or pain behind your eyes, sometimes with vomiting as part of its side effects associated with eye, but not really a red line in the eye, as you have stated in your post. If it is part of an allergic reaction then it is possible because conjunctivitis can be caused by an allergic reaction.
Avatar f tn Accutane has many potential side effects but this must be balanced against the fact that it provides the best chance of long term remission from acne. However, as your son may outgrow his tendancy for acne as adolesence passes, I agree this should be considered only if his acne continues after other treatments have been fully explored. Which antibiotic and creams has he tried? Erythromycin has a high resistance rate and oxytetracycline is usually preferable.
Avatar f tn Maybe not as severe side effects but the overall impression I am getting is that Accutane is more effective and if closely monitored, safer. Is this true? My doctor didnt give me the impression that there was much I needed to be worried about. All I was told was to take it with a full glass of water 2x a day. Are there severe side effects that I need to worry about while taking this antibiotic?
Avatar m tn Accutane induced rosacea is mentioned on various forums. This is quite an informative answer i came across on "The Rosacea Forum" - Rosacea from accutane? "Accutane/isotretinoin flushing is a big red flag that the body has had enough and isn't coping with the retinoic acid... Hives often indicate a serious drug reaction. The post-Accutane period is the most unknown.
Avatar n tn My daughter is on accutane and has extremly dry, cracked and bloody hands and lips, and her face is very dry. We have tried many different ointments and other lotions, nothing is working. What do you think we should use?
Avatar n tn Many people (including me) have to take oral antibiotics long term and use topical acne gels every day. Email me in the Acne forum, letting me know if you're male or female and I will help you further.
546892 tn?1214525401 Before begining treatment with Accutain, an individual should discuss about his condition with the health care provider for the possible accutane benefits and side effects in order to get it clear whether the treatment is right. Accutain is used in the treatment of the severest of acne cases which haven't responded to all other types of acne treatments.
Avatar n tn t really enjoy it because of the dryness and lack of excitement and I really wonder if that is due to the long-term effects of Accutane causing the dryness and libido problems. If I hear anyone in the future bring up going on this medication, I will steer them clear because it has caused nothing but problems. Keep in mind, my acne also came back so all of that crap for nothing. GOOD LUCK! Hopefully things get better for you.
Avatar n tn tried everything, have only had cystic acne 2 1/2 years prior to this, but tried all the methods prescribed by my G.P, and have a long term condition (HS, recurrence of abscesses). Initially it wasn't so bad, started on a 40mg daily dose and after a couple of days started to feel some of the side effects, e.g., chapped lips, itching, dry skin, aggravation of acne, and towards the end of the first month, slight joint pain, especially in my back.
Avatar f tn I do not want her on long term Prednisone use due to the terrible effects of such a drug. She has had a full workup with pediatric endocrinologist who has ruled out any tumors or abnormal hormone levels. Endocrinologist states "everything looks fine." Where do we go from here!!! She is now very severely scarred on both shoulders and chest. Very few cysts on her face but they are creeping up and have started on her neck.
Avatar f tn Hi, I had been on accutane for almost two months (60 mg a day). In the first month I had some headaches and dizziness but it wasn't a big deal. But, a couple weeks into the second month I started having really, really awful pounding pressuring headaches with really bad eye pain and dizziness. It hurt to move my eyes around and I had some difficulty focusing and changing my focus.
7163794 tn?1457366813 myself to get up? Is this in my head, or is it possible there are long term effects to pain meds and suboxone use? Could it just be me? Has anyone else felt this?
