Accutane and crohn's disease

Common Questions and Answers about Accutane and crohn's disease

accutane

Avatar n tn Yes, I had mild acne when I was younger and my dermatologist gave me Accutane, a few months later I was in severe abdominal pain, fever, very weak and ended up in the emergency room originally diagnosed with appendicitis only to find out my appendix was perfect at which point they found the diseased portion of the small intestine and diagnosed me with Crohn's. Initially, I had frequent flare ups and was constantly under medication, but slowly and with the help of the Famous Dr.
Avatar m tn So far, lawsuits have focused on Accutane and birth defects, depression and suicide, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Eg: "Accutane Lawsuit: Andrew McCarrell Wins $25 Million After Having Colon Removed." No mention of Accutane associated with hypothyroidism. Good thing you only took the drug for three days.
Avatar n tn And yes, they even say that there are lawsuits going on regarding use of Accutane and CD starting up. The warnings for Accutane are very similar to that of 2-butoxyethanol. They also comment on malabsorption, lipid & cholesterol issues, fever, and that autoimmune action on the red blood cells as autoimmune hemolytic anemia is very often present AND that it was more common in the 20s and 30s for those who cleaned a lot (the upper classes).
Avatar f tn For the past 3 years, I have been getting recurrent canker sores. They would apprear twice a month. They disappeared only when I was in my secong and third trimester of pregnancy. I did various tests and a colonoscopy to rule out Crohn's disease. I also did the ASCA and ANCA blood tests. My colonsocopy was normal. ANCA was negative but ASCA was positive. I dont have the classic symptoms of Crohn's (diarrhea). is a positive ASCA an indicator of Crohn's?
Avatar m tn Hello, I'm a 31 year old male with Crohn's disease. I have a question regarding the appearance of my anus, and whether this is caused by Crohn's disease. For a while (probably years) I've noticed while cleaning that my anus felt as though it had flaps, or almost lips for a lack of a better term. Recently i decided to take a picture, and this was confirmed. And to my horror, was fairly unattractive. Almost as if my anus is loose or has developed hanging tags.
48668 tn?1201543083 This is the response from the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America on whether there is a connection between Crohn's Disease and Type 1 Diabetes: We don't know of any research that has indicated a connection between diabetes and Crohn's.
Avatar n tn I was not familiar with "Perianal Abscesses" so I checked out a couple of sights. On one sight it did say that some people are more susceptible to perianal abscesses such as those that have: Diabetes, Aids or HIV, Crohn's or persons on medications that suppress the body's immune system, such as steroids (prednisone, methylprednisolone), or those undergoing chemotherapy for cancer ..........so I do not think that it is indictive of having Crohn's.
Avatar n tn is it possible to have crohn's disease while having none of the symptoms and being on no medications for almost 10 years.
Avatar m tn Hello, I am a 20 year old male and have been taking accutane (claravis) for about 5 months now. I am taking two 40mg pills twice a day... I have experienced a few annoying side effects but one of the major ones i have noticed is hair loss. I had very thick hair pre-accutane and i noticed hair-thnning lately and my hairline as also been receding. This is driving me crazy. Will this be a permanent side-effect or temporary and will my hair come back to its original hair-line.
Avatar n tn I have been a type 1 diabetic since age 10--53 years now. Approximately 30 yrs. ago I started having a lot of bloody diarrhea, etc. It took 2 yrs.+ to clear it up and I went for approximately 20 yrs. without any symptoms. When it started up again I was diagnosed with Crohn's and have been on various treatments since then. I have been taking Asacol for years. I have also used enemas--sometimes daily and sometimes twice a day.
Avatar f tn Hi, welcome to the Crohn's Community Forum. I have had Crohn's for 40 yrs, dx when I was 24 yrs old. Cortisone IS used to treat Crohn's, but now only for short periods, say 3-4 months, because of the side effects of long term use. If the Crohn's is in the terminal ileum area and/or first part of the colon, a newer steroid, Entocort can be used, which does not have the debilitating, and embarrassing, side effects that prednisolone and prednisone do.
Avatar f tn You have had a pretty comprehensive workup, and likely would have excluded Crohn's disease if present. I cannot give surgical advice without evaluation, but there are a few antibody tests that you may want to consider to pin down the diagnosis. This can include the anti-OmpC antibody, ASCA, and pANCA tests. Some of them are investigational, but can be considered if the diagnosis is elusive. If the tests are negative, then I would pursue diagnoses other than Crohn's.
Avatar n tn I had Crohn's Disease for 41/2 years and 2 years ago i was also thought to have bilary dyskinesia and at that time I was having a really hard time with my Crohn's and the doctor suggested I have my gallbladded removed to rule out a Crohn's flare since it is an accessory organ and not neccesarily needed....
Avatar m tn weight loss ( I was up to 160 right before accutane, lost 20-25 pounds in less than 2 months right after I stopped accutane, and am down to 120 currently) I feel like I have no muscle or fat on me. I'm always hungry but I can't gain a pound.
Avatar n tn Friends and relatives have no conception as to what the disease is, and when you say it is an auto-immune disease, one could thought of speaking in a foreign language. I just don't bother explaning any more, mainly because uneducated people fid the details embarrassing - I don't now. Having Crohn's disease does not define me as a person and I try hard not to let it take over my life.
Avatar n tn However, he also still has many symptoms that are unrelated to the Crohn’s Disease and they are now testing him for other diseases which may be Lupus, MS and or Rheumatoid Arthritis. We are wondering if there are any recommended treatment for Crohn’s other than Prednisone and Align and if there is any other disease that it may be and how to get tested for it. We have tried so many things and nothing seems to be working at this point. We would appreciate any advice.
3242115 tn?1447004766 I was told I may have Crohn's Disease due to my symptoms and am waiting to hear back from a specialist as to when I can have a scope done. I also have suffered with Bulimia and know of a few cases where the eating disorder has in fact caused the disease due to the unhealthy ways of eating and then regurgitating the food back up.
Avatar f tn Hey, I've got Crohn's and understand the weight gain issue. Try any kind of cream based sauces (I became a huge fan of Olive Garden this way...Chicken Carbonara...yum yum). Anything tomato based tended to irritate my stomach since it was too acidy, so if you're cooking a tomato based sauce at home, add sugar since that will cut down on the acid.
Avatar f tn What are the symptoms for an Crohn's disease? Can it lead to any kinda complication like Arthritis? Anyone can explain it precisely?
Avatar m tn Hello, I have been taking melatonin supplements for a couple weeks now. The past couple days I had abnormal looking stools, and I started looking around on the internet and found that melatonin can cause abnormal looking stools, and even sometimes trigger symptoms of Crohn's disease. But what I was wondering is this: when it says that it can trigger symptoms of Crohn's disease does it mean it just "mimics" Crohn's disease?
Avatar m tn On doctor suspects that because I have not taken Humira injection for about a month that it might have played a role in this mystery, Has anyone had anything similar to this or have insight on success and failures from Humira and Remicade, I really appreciate any and all responses and insight

789585 tn?1289952561 For me when I have a flare-up (Crohn's) I usually get sores like what you are talking about.(They are VERY painful) My GI doc actually saw them and had me see a dermatologist THAT SAME HOUR!!!!!!! The dermatologist examined me and all of the sores and said it was dinfinitely from the Crohn's flare-up and put me on a anti-biotic Monodox 75mg twice a day. He also said that there was no wash that would take care of this.

Avatar f tn I am now 50 and have been diagnosed with Crohn's disease since I was 27. My mother also had it. My bowels have been in remission for quit a long time, but I suffer with severe fistulas and now severe arthritis. I am on Remicaid infusions for over a year now. My arthritis is getting worse and worse. It is now causing nerve damage in my fingers and one knee. Is this normal with Crohn's? It doesn't seem to just be my joints. Also my radius and ulna portions of my arms will swell.
