Abscess vs cellulitis

Common Questions and Answers about Abscess vs cellulitis

abscess

Avatar n tn If a diagnosis of cellulitis is made there is very little pus produced to drain and so antibiotics are sufficient and drainage is not required. A simple test to diagnose a cellulitis is to touch it - if it's rock hard its probably a cellulitis. An abscess on the other hand is a collection of pus which the body forms to wall off from the rest of the body and so must be drained. A simple test for an abscess is to touch it - if it's soft its probably an abscess.
Avatar m tn Afternoon. I have had cellulitis in my nose for over a month.... took Bactrim, Clindamycin, and another 5 days of Bactrim.. which didn't help in the first place... but... i have this swollen membrane (i guess) from the tip of my nose about 1/2 inch back... it always feels like it is going to swell up again.... with no insurance another 125.00 is not what I want to pay since it seems like none of that helped anyway... anybody have any thoughts on this one???
4251679 tn?1370305531 My poor niece just had surgery on a hernia(spelling?) on the inside of her leg 8 days ago. Yesterday my sister noticed a big bruise on her lady parts and major swelling had started to form right by the incision. The doctors aren't sure what it is or what caused it, they're thinking its cellulitis but for it to be cellulitis there has to be an abscess which hasn't formed. Prayers that these damn drs can figure out what the issue is and fix it!
Avatar f tn Based upon these findings, I have it ruled down to folliculitis vs. a cyst. The pain mimics that of past underarm folliculitis, however due to the location of the inflammation, drainage or lancing isn't possible for a solo act. I have doxycycline available, and was going to restart it to see if this lump disappears (along with witch hazel for anal-rectal cleaning). Any help would be appreciated!
Avatar m tn It sounds like you have a lowered immunity or are getting exposed to bacteria for example from children who have been at a day care center or some other similar place. After you clear yourself of this abscess try changing towels more often and don't share. Keep everything clean and wash hands more often. Wash clothes that have been exposed to the absces in hot soapy water. Change clothes often. Staph is easily spread and can spread easily.
Avatar n tn One other possibility might be that the apical abscess in the alveolar bone is flaring up with no path of exit since the root canal was completed. In the presence of a lot of draining pus in the root canal system, sometimes antibiotics or a delay in finishing to allow drainage is a good idea. As is it now, hopefully someone can see you to determine whether antibiotics or a retreatment might be in order.
Avatar f tn 2 days ago, I had a dental abscess in the upper right side of my mouth, between the tooth and the gum, and it was slowly draining from a hole in my gum... So, I decided to try and squeeze some of the infection out myself and as I was in the process of doing so, the abscess busted and drained internally (into my cheek). My face started swelling immediately and in about 15 seconds, it had tripled in size!
Avatar f tn IV drug User, I mainlyuse Heroin. My right arm just had a abscess that burst while inshower. Drained quickly & healed quickly. However my left forearm became swollen overnight and has light red bruising patches where my last hits were. There are no streaks but have dull pain and are not hot but warm. In the middle of the crook of this arm, the same day of the swelling onset, a strange small blister came quickly and quickly burst with blood.
Avatar n tn ve googled and see that some potential causes are cellulitis, hypothyroidism, tooth abscess, allergies, trauma, infections, inflammation, I think lupus?, and cancer. I have had some recent dental issues (infection, teeth pulled, roots left too long after a tooth fell out). Has anyone had this? So weird. I mean, I guess I should assume it's from the dental stuff, but I just had another panoramic xray, and the dentist said everything was fine.
Avatar m tn Please tell me if this needs antibiotics, that is an ( =like 1" across and was 1" high) abscess that was drained, that is a weird rash that I think might be cellulitis? on the top is one that formed with it at the same time and is now just a scar and a hard lump. Before them I had 1 in the middle of the armpit like lymph node area and that lasted a week and disappeared, then a few days later those 2 formed, and it's been 7 or 8 days since then.
Avatar f tn When infection goes deeper it is called cellulitis. You may need antibiotic therapy, especially if is around the nose or lip.Do consult your doc.
Avatar n tn It may be cellulitis. The antibiotics may be preventing the spread of the infection but it won't resolve the underlying issue which is a bad tooth. You should have him see a dentist and probably extract or do a root canal on the bad tooth. It is extremely important to take care of it as the infection can spread and be life threatening.
Avatar f tn the lymph node on the left side of my groin area swelled, I had a draining abscess on the outside of my labia and I took myself to the emergency room...blood tests and swabs confirmed my diagnosis was cellulitis. I was placed on a course of antibiotics and within 2 weeks the would had healed...a month goes by, it returns in the same place with lymph nose swelling and all...I go to my primary this time, and she doubled down on the antibiotics and sent me home...it healed again...
1373769 tn?1278603610 The injection sites turned into Cellulitis and I ended up in the hospital receiving intravenous antibiotics. This happened about 10 times over the course of about 5 years. Twice the antibiotics could not stop the redness from spreading on my legs - so I had surgeries to cut the abscesses out of my legs. I also have sensitive skin. While I was in the hospital, the Infectious Disease Specialist told me that I was getting the Cellulitis infections due to the Betaseron.
Avatar m tn I have had a smallish (maybe 2 cm in diameter) skin abscess or infected cyst on my back next to my cervical spine for the last 2 weeks which doesn't seem to be getting bigger or coming to a head (I tried squeezing it thinking it was a pimple at first.) When I touch it, it feels soft/puffy as though there's some fluid under it (same as a gum boil) and it's no longer hot/painful, just itchy sometimes.
1737159 tn?1316672635 It started as a small reddish bite last saturday which I suspect was an insect bite, I just disregarded it but it grew big until wednesday, I went to see his pedia and it was already cellulitis, he was given an antibiotic (amoclav) which I expect would help the swelling but the swelling became bigger and bigger.
Avatar f tn Good morning forum.6 days ago I went to a urgent care for a bump i had in my pubic hair area, I'm a male. The doctor told me its skin abscess. He drained it and puss started coming out. He took a wound culture for testing using a swab. And prescribed me doxycycline antibiotic. 5 days have passed and I still haven't taken the antibiotics because I want to know about my wound swab culture.
Avatar m tn It was minor, according to his dentist (I asked if it could be life threatening and she laughed), and she said there was a very small abscess which went away. He took penicillin and did topical antimicrobial and he says he feels totally fine now. (he never had a fever or swollen lymph nodes- just some swelling at the gum). He saw two dentists, both of whom told him he should get all his wisdom teeth out even though they're not impacted or decaying (they did x rays).
Avatar m tn Hello, It is unlikely that it is a wart given your history of trauma. It can be due to abscess or cellulites skin. Cellulitis is an acute infection of skin and soft tissues characterized by localized pain, swelling, tenderness, erythema, and warmth. It usually follows a break in the skin, such as a fissure, cut, laceration, insect bite, or puncture wound. I suggest you to get an evaluation done from a dermatologist. I hope it helps. Take care and regards.
Avatar m tn I feel way much better. No pain, no fevers, etc. The abscess is really small, like dots. I asked if it was contagious when I was there and the person I asked told me "as long as you're getting better, it shouldn't be contagious". I was also wondering can I kiss anybody now that I've been on antibiotics for 10 days? I would like to hear from other people. Thank you in advance.
Avatar m tn I presented with only one sore at my cheekbone and was given clindamycin orally for 14 days and Bactroban ointment for topical use. The sore was believed to be an early indication of MRSA. I quickly developed cellulitis and swelling near, but not touching, the apparent abscess, as well as blisters in my nose. I used the mupiricin.(Bactroban) to keep the nasal blisters moist. Now diagnosed with post-herpetic neuralgia, but I still have blisters in my nose treating with Bactroban.
Avatar f tn If loose skin is present around the puncture sites, a pocket of pus will form an abscess. If the skin is not loose, such as on a foot or the tail, the infection spreads throughout the tissues and causes swelling and pain; this type of infection is called cellulitis. so i would recommend you to take the cat to the vet where the vet will place the cat on Antibiotics given within 24 hours will usually stop spread of the infection and development of an abscess.
Avatar m tn From the history that you have provided it looks like paronychia of the nail which progressed to infection of the fingertip. Paronychia is a soft tissue infection around a fingernail that begins as cellulitis but that may progress to a definite abscess. It is of two types: acute caused by bacterial infection and chronic caused by fungal infection.
