Avatar f tn I went to the dentist for significant facial swelling, and was diagnosed with the abscess. The swelling has gone down, however I now have a pus pocket on my gum above my molars. It's only painful when I touch it, but I can see the swelling under my cheek when I smile. Since I'm already on Amoxicillin, can I pop the abscess using a sterilized needle? It's Friday night, and the dentist won't be in until Monday...PLEASE HELP!!
Avatar f tn It is not hard and not terribly sensitive today. What could have happened to cause this swelling and do you think the abscess has not been completely resolved? I do have a follow up in 3 days, but am very anxious about what may have happened, especially since the swelling goes below my jaw and the tooth worked was an upper one...

Avatar n tn 5, I have decreased facial sensation in the area of tooth 20 (the affected tooth), and I still have very slight facial swelling with a swelling at the root area of tooth 20 which I can feel with my tongue. I am happy to report that it is not especially painful but I have continued to take ibuprofen every 6 hours along with the penicillin. I know that I have to contact my dentist but I am curious to know how often this happens? This is my fifth root canal and this is my first bad experience.

Avatar n tn Hello, This persistent abscess that does not get cleared with antibiotics is called Parulis as this elevated nodule is actually an opening of fistulous tract from some chronic abscess either in association with tooth (periapical abscess) or gum abscess or could be sinus in your case. As I can not do physical exam hence can not say for sure about the origin of the abscess. It needs x-ray and second opinion of a dentist who can examine.
Avatar n tn Get that tooth pulled for heavens sake! There is so much risk of blood infection and other complications that it isn't even worth leaving in, especially if your dog has already developed a facial abscess. Good luck!
Avatar n tn Hi, I have a15year old son that goes thru bouts of lip swelling, facial swelling and nausea. It seems that stressful situations bring it on but now it is a weekly occurance. Lately the swelling has not been going down. He has seem an allergist, hematolgist, and GI doctor but they are all baffled. The have been treating him for CVS but I do not believe it is since he has the bad swelling. Any thoughts would be great!
Avatar n tn Do you have a crown on that tooth or are they planning on doing a filling since the root canal? The swelling is a sign that the infection is still there. Antibiotics is good, but when you get on a plane with the altitude and the pain and swelling that you mention, you are going to be in alot more pain. Check with the endodontist again before you fly in a plane!
Avatar n tn I had a root canal un my upper back tooth on Friday. I woke up Saturday with a facial droop, a kanka sore and swelling from my eye to my jaw bone. I knew I had an abscess when they started. My face hurts to the touch and the kanka hurts as well. I look like a chipmunk. I am on antibiotics. When can I expect the swelling to go down? When will it stop hurting? Does anyone know why this happened. It was a repair of an old root canal done 25 years ago.
Avatar f tn An abscessed tooth is a painful infection at the root of a tooth or between the gum and a tooth. It's most commonly caused by severe tooth decay. Other causes of tooth abscess are trauma to the tooth, such as when it is broken or chipped, and gingivitis or gum disease. These problems can cause openings in the tooth enamel, which allows bacteria to infect the center of the tooth (called the pulp). The infection may also spread from the root of the tooth to the bones supporting the tooth.

Avatar n tn Has your dog had a recent injury, or cut there? If so it might have got infected. But a likely cause of this would be a tooth abscess. He/she needs to see a vet.
Avatar n tn Hi Doctor, I have been to several doctors including an ENT for my ear problems. I have had sinus pain/ pressure/ and migraines. The ENT subscribed something but it didnt work. The other doctor said theres nothing wrong with me. Instead of saying, " I dont know whats wrong with you, I would have preferred that or recommend me to another doctor or specialist. In my mind, I was thinking I am fine but its all in my head, as my doctor pretty much put it.
Avatar n tn If there was a root canal done in the above tooth? In few cases root canals can fail due to branching and convolutions of the tooth roots. See your dentist at the earliest. Treatment will be specific based on the cause. Best luck and regards!
Avatar n tn Hi, I had a toothache in my back molar for about a week and a half. A constant throbing sharp shooting terrible toothache from a really decayed back tooth. About a week ago I started taking Erythromycin and have been taking it as told. Now today my gums and cheek is swollen. The Dentist switched my antibiotic to Clindamycin and I just started taking that because he doesn't think the other one was working....no kidding.
Avatar m tn The gum above the tooth is also perfectly fine. I had an abscess tooth before (oddly the exact same tooth just on the opposite side) about 2 years ago. The constant pressure feeling is the same but the swelling looks slightly different. When tapping my abscessed tooth there was incredible pain but now when i tap this tooth the pain hardly changes. The gum tissue above my abscessed tooth was also very sensitive, dark pink, and began to develop a boil. There is no sign of that this time.
Avatar f tn I have a tooth Abscess and I went to a doctor who gave me some antibiotics but they made me really sick so I went to another doctor and they gave me different antibiotics and I have been taking them for 3 days now but the swelling has not gone down. I am allergic to penicillin so whenever I get antibiotics they give me special antibiotics.I am just wondering if this is normal not to see the swelling go down yet.

My question is, how long will it take for the swelling to go down? It's been approximately 48 hours and it still feels about the same size. What would happen if it were to burst? At what point would I need to go to the ER.

Avatar f tn 1. When can I expect the facial abscess to resolve? It is still present, although smaller, after one full course of antibiotics and the root canal. How will it be able to resolve if the root is re-sealed? 2. Should the abscess still be causing pain in my lower jaw and teeth? My front teeth hurt even though the abscess was in my lower molar. My face also still hurts quite a bit and it is hard for me to talk and move my lower face. Thank you.
