Common Questions and Answers about Abscess gum infection

abscess

Avatar n tn Hi Sevina, from what i have heard, a gum abscess is an infection and the puss coming out is evidence. You really should see your dentist about this and get some antibiotics to clear it up.
Avatar m tn The longer you wait, the more risk you take with an abscess and the lower the success of your treatment as the infection will spread and cause further harm.
Avatar n tn Thermal sensitivity and discomfortable biting are probably associated with occlusal interference. Occlusal adjustment can generally eliminate the symptoms. Gum abscess may result from periodontal or periapical infection. Seeing a periodontist to evaluate periodontal condition is advised.
Avatar m tn What about a gum abscess that is being treated with antibiotics? My boyfriend has a gum abscess and he has been prescribed penicillin and topical antibiotics. He says it is getting better, but for some reason his cheek on the other side of his mouth got swollen (maybe unrelated from biting it) and he says the area of the abscess is still a little irritated even after being on antibiotics today.
Avatar n tn In a dental abscess, or tooth abscess there is accumulation of pus inside the teeth or gums. The abscess usually originates from a bacterial infection and is mostly caused by a dental infection. The common presenting complaints are severe toothache, breath odour, fever, pain when chewing, sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling of gums, swollen glands etc. It can be diagnosed with the help of clinical examination, dental x-rays and other tests. Antibiotics are given for the infection.
Avatar m tn An abscess is basically a build up of pus and infection in the jaw bone area. I assume that since you've seen a dentist recently, it probably would've been spotted at your last checkup as they generally develop from large cavities. There are abscess that also develop from gum disease as well but assuming you had a cleaning and check up, thats also a little more unlikely. Best to get it checked out and taken care of.
Avatar m tn Often, this abscess is caused by food caught in pockets at the gumline. The infection forms at the root, and then eats away at the gum tissue, eventually creating a channel that leads to the gum surface. Once the channel reaches the gum surface, it appears to be a pimple or raised, white growth. Gumboils often (though not always) hurt, and sometimes the tooth feels raised or displaced.
1881960 tn?1320699966 My doctor gave me penicillin and something for pain but its day 3 and nothing has changed. I can feel the abscess in my mouth for the first time today. It's not getting smaller, only larger! I am 29 and on coumadin and lovenox so no dentist will see me. I've called dozens of dentists to no avail. I am trying not to become frustrated but each passing day I'm stuck in bed isn't helping. Any suggestions ?
Avatar f tn Hello. The other day underneath my tongue on the bottom of my left gum line I felt pain when I pressed on this area with my tongue. A few days later, it is still painful but now a couple of white spots have developed. When I rub my tongue over the sores it almost tastes salty and as if my gum is punctured. What could this be? Am I in need of medical care?
Avatar f tn Other causes of tooth abscess are trauma to the tooth, such as when it is broken or chipped, and gingivitis or gum disease. These problems can cause openings in the tooth enamel, which allows bacteria to infect the center of the tooth (called the pulp). The infection may also spread from the root of the tooth to the bones supporting the tooth.
Avatar f tn So, I decided to try and squeeze some of the infection out myself and as I was in the process of doing so, the abscess busted and drained internally (into my cheek). My face started swelling immediately and in about 15 seconds, it had tripled in size! I went straight to the ER but by the time I got there, my eye was swelling shut, my neck was swollen, and it looked like I had a golf ball implanted in my cheek! The doc gave my 900mg of clindamiacin through my I.v.
Avatar n tn I have a bum on my gum on the left side of my face behind the last tooth. Some people are saying it might be a caker sore or an abscess. The bump became bigger and I noticed a white substance inside of the bump. It grew bigger than with the help of hot water and salt it began to drain. First question what is this on my gum? How long does it take to heal? and Should I go to the dentist after it fully heals?
Avatar f tn The trauma will not cause an abscess but at this point the ulcer should be healing. If it has not I would certainly have your dentist look at it.
Avatar f tn Your English is just fine. You need to go to the dentist!!!! Infections spread rapidly in the mouth!!! Do you mean an abscess or a tumor. Abscess if you don't know is usually an infection under the tooth in the roots. I know it can be expensive but you shouldn't be in this discomfort! They use different antibiotics for different infections. I do wonder why you didn't go back before this! Dental pain can be so bad. Take care.
Avatar n tn I went to see the dentist this past Saturday. I have a tooh abscess - with swelling in the cheek area. My dentist started me on antibiotics. My question is, how long will it take for the swelling to go down? It's been approximately 48 hours and it still feels about the same size. What would happen if it were to burst? At what point would I need to go to the ER.
Avatar n tn yesterday i had two teeth pulled due to a gum abscess. I was'n t comfortable about this. I thought if there was infection in your mouth you should'nt have teeth pulled, anyway I have a swollen chec. I am taking medication two different kinds. Three times a day. Is this normal after having teeth pulled.
Avatar n tn identification of source? What do u mean? By X-ray? please what are u suggesting?
Avatar f tn Periodontal infection may cause peri apical abscess, but rarely happen. If it does, pocket depth is probably more than 10 mm. 7 mm is not likely to cause peri apical infection.
Avatar n tn Other than this he could also be having a gum infection, an infection of the skin of face, a boil or abscess or infection of the jaw bone. It is difficult to diagnose this on net. Please consult his pediatrician and his dentist as soon as possible (read immediately!). Meanwhile please give him acetaminophen to make the pain tolerable. Take care!
Avatar n tn I recently went to the dentist because of pain in between my gum and an abscess forming below. He did an xray and found no tooth damage. He found that I needed a root canal two teeth back. It is still incredibly painful in between my teeth and there is incredible pressure below my tooth where the abscess is forming. Should I go to the doctor again? The pus has not started draining in it despite attempts with salt water, tea bags and hydrogen peroxide to draw it out.
Avatar n tn Hi, I had a tooth out next to my front tooth about 6 years ago and it got an abscess after the gum healed and closed about 6 months later. I have a wound outside the gum and I feel the abscess when I press under my nose. I have been to a surgeon and the xray showed a dark spot, but when they cut the gum I felt it all and cried and cried. Due to having high blood pressure they didn't numb the area well at all, so I made them stop.
Avatar f tn I have abscess on gum and another painful toothful but im 32 weeks and scared to go to dentist should i?
Avatar n tn I went to my regular dentist on 1/13/06 and xrays showed a large abscess in tooth #10, as well as a smaller abscess in tooth #20. On 1/17/06 I had a RCT done on tooth #10, as well as an incision in the roof of my mouth behind that tooth to help extract the infection. On 1/19/06, I had a RCT done on tooth #20, with one 0.05mm post placed. I have been on Antibiotics since 1/13/06, taking Penicillin VK 500mg QID, so I'm now on my Eighth day of antibiotics.
Avatar n tn Hi, I had a dental abscess in February last year on one of my front bottom teeth which was treated with a root canal and antbiotics. It seemed ok but about 2 months ago a small hole appeared on the gum in front of this teeth which sporadically leaks pus and the tooth feels sore now and then (with varying intesity of pain). My dentist has prescribed 2 courses of amoxicillin now but this has not fixed the problem. Any advice on what I should do now?
