A tooth abscess is usually a complication of tooth decay. In a dental abscess, or tooth abscess there is accumulation of pus inside the teeth or gums. The abscess usually originates from a bacterial infection and is mostly caused by a dental infection. The common presenting complaints are severe toothache, breath odour, fever, pain when chewing, sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling of gums, swollen glands etc.
I had a crown done about 6 weeks ago on my upper left back molar. While I had the temporary crown, everything seemed fine - it was as if nothing happened. But after receiving the permanent crown, I began having sensitivity to hot and cold. It really wasn't that bad, so I didn't think much of it. But about 2 weeks after getting the permanent crown, my gum (cheek side) started to hurt (slight throbbing) and became a little inflamed and pulled back.

What is a good way to prevent bad breath, I brush my teeth and use mouthwash. I brush my tongue and floss.I stand a little further from people because I don't want them to smell my breath or smell theirs. I think bad breath gives a person questions about their hygene.I look on tv and all around and people talk so close to each other without that fear.Is there something out there to make me feel confident. Thank you.
p.s i don't have any gum diseases. only 2 cavities.
About ten years ago I had a root canal done. Ever since then I noticed my breath began began to get worse. Now it has come to the point that my breath can be smelled a mile away. Even when my mouth is closed it can be smelled. I brush fequently, use mouthwash and floss and the smell never change not even for a minute. When I eat the smell is even worse.I've gone to the dentist and they ruled out gum disease. I also went to the doctor and they can't find anything wrong with me.

There are many causes of bad odour from the mouth like gum disease, halitosis, tooth decay, abscess etc. Poorly fitting dental appliances, yeast infections of the mouth, and dental caries are few other common causes. Respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia or bronchitis, chronic sinus infections, postnasal drip, diabetes, acid reflux and liver or kidney problems are few other causes of bad breath.
t want to contradict mammo , there is another major problem, which is overlooked, could be due to individuals that have dry mouth, who usualy also have a slow digestion, and when you drink milk or milk products, will have bad breath. You must have a big cavity, that food gets stuck in it , to give you bad breath. Also a crown, that the cement is partially gone, brush and floss cannot get to, also can give you bad breath .
However, I would occasionally have really bad breath and I floss after every meal/snack because I have food traps. So, the point is, I was flossing and for the second time the crown popped off and the smell was from the crown. There was decayed tooth inside I think, I cleaned it and it still smells. I think some kind of chemical reaction with the metal is happening or something. Just a guess - but I'm getting to the bottom of this. I may just leave it off.
That must be so frustrating. Your problem is a common one. There is a bad breath clinic in Los Angeles. One of their products is called TheraBreath. Many people who use it regularly no longer get morning breath. I am not in any way affiliated with the company, but i really like their mouth rinse. It is sold in some drug and department stores and is available online. I believe they will even send free samples. It might be worth a try.
I was able to control gum disease, so my bad breath is not coming from that. I do have acid reflux and have been on medication for a while. It is so embarrasing to even ask the doctor. I will make an appoinment with an thoat doctores to see if it is coming from there. Once again, thanks. I felt like I was alone out there.
Swelling gum means you have gum problem or what we call gingivitis...
poor oral hygiene cause gingivitis, but in your case, if the crown was bad, like overhanged or undersized there would be a problem, cause this crown may harbor bacteria in the gingival line (gum line) which cause inflammation of the gingiva (gum).
The treatment for your case may be replacement of the crown plus proper oral hygiene...

This persistent abscess that does not get cleared with antibiotics is called Parulis as this elevated nodule is actually an opening of fistulous tract from some chronic abscess either in association with tooth (periapical abscess) or gum abscess or could be sinus in your case.
As I can not do physical exam hence can not say for sure about the origin of the abscess. It needs x-ray and second opinion of a dentist who can examine.
I have been on clindamycin 150mg 2 every 8 hours for 4 days with a gum abscess. Its still hasnt come to a head yet, and very painful , I can feel a heart beat in it.Was wondering how long will it last. And is there any way to make it come to head. Had mini dental implants put in 3 years ago with 4 up top ,, and the gum abscess is right on top of it .
A root canal was performed and then the crown was fitted. Recently I noticed bad breath. After a while I figured out that the source of the bad breath was the gum area right above the crown. If I rub my finger in the gum area just above the crown, it smells really bad. I can even smell it in the floss after I have flossed the crown tooth.
My dentist did the ususl once-every 6 months cleaning but the smell persists.
