Believe Cymbalta and Effexor are in the same class of drugs. Not familar with Abilify. None of us likes the weight gain that seems inevitable with many antidepressants.
Wellbutrin in very stimulating and in another class of antidepressants. Suspect there would be less sexual side effects and weight gain, but others will have to weigh in on it. It never helped me; just amplified the anxiety to point I had to have Soma to relax tight muscles.
I dont think Abilify works for depression alone. I ran out of my effexor xr (antidepressant) and only took my abilify and was a real mess for a week.. It was as if i werent taking anything. The abilify doesnt work alone in my case. Its only a booster pill, so to speak. I was tearful and restless without my antidepressant. However that could have been withdrawal or something.
ve experienced a major depressive episode. Anyway, I HAVE tried Abilify with Effexor XR. I had to stop taking it because it gave me restless leg syndrome. I couldn't sit still. It may not affect you that way, but that's what it did to me. That was the only negative side effect. I wasn't on it long enough to know if it was beneficial emotionally/psychologically, but I "sensed" that it might have been if I had been able to stay on it.
m sure your dr has you increasing the dose because at higher doses it has some effects on dopomine. Stay with effexor xr do not switch to regular effexor- bad side effects!!! If for any reason you stop taking effexor xr, taper down your dose to avoid w/d feelings. Hope this helps and please post any other questions you may have. Good luck!
The pharmacist told me about Effexor XR (that will be going generic July 1st). Has anyone been on this?? Has it helped?? I have also tried paxil, WellbutrinXL, and Prozac. These made me more depressed. I guess i just need some help as to what else is out there that works... I really don't have anyone that can relate to my depression so hoping someone in here can...
I took Abilify as an adjunct to Effexor XR about two years ago. It made me have restless leg syndrome. It may not affect you that way. Everyone is different. If you're going to try it, make sure you're consistent about taking your meds. They can't work if you don't take them as they're prescribed. I don't mean to preach to you, but you know what I'm saying is true. Good luck if you try Abilify. I hope it works for you.
I'm only 19 with ADHD, depression/anxiety issues. I had been on Effexor XR 75 mg for 6 years and Paxil 20 mg for 4 years. My liver enzymes (ALT 120) were elevated and both psychiatrist and primary doctor agreed to discontinue these drugs. I was tapered off each drug one at a time over a 6 week period plus my Straterra 60mg for ADHD. It has now been 3 weeks since no further meds. m wondering if maybe Effexor XR is too strong for me and maybe just the regular Effexor would be more suitable? I like the fact that I'm wired and on task all day, but the headaches aren't fun. My therapist says that if cutting my dose down on the Effexor XR resolves the headaches then she has to take me off of it altogether. Do you have any insight on this med, or perhaps suggest something else. I am afraid of staring a med that makes me feel lethargic, I have to be on task.
effexor xr and 20 mg. Celexa. It has been trial and error but finally with the increase of the effexor xr and addition of Celexa I still have some depression and some mood swings but overall, I am MUCH better.
I took Prozac for many years and really good success, really worked great for me and after several years it lost it's effect on me. Sometimes it it a matter of increasing your present meds. Best of luck to you.
Regarding Effexor, yes Fuzzz is corect in saying that it can be a bit more uncomfortible to stop, but I just know too many people that have had great success with Effexor XR to bash it for it's unfortunate withdrawl side effect.

I then took Effexor and later ther Effexor XR. Effexor XR allowed me to live a reasonably normal life raising a child and having a career. For at least 3 years my depression has slowly gotten progressively worse. My counselor and I believe it is time to add an additional medication, possibly welbutrin or change to a different antidepressant. Currently I take 300mg of effexor XR. This is the same level I have taken for the entire time I've used effexor. I would like input and advice.
This is why Effexor XR is made with a slow release formula. This keep a steady flow of the drug in the system and reduces spikes and hard drops between dosages.
One way around this with Venlafaxine is that you could for example take half your daily dosage twice a day. (You see what I mean?) so lets say your doc prescribed you 150Mgs of Venlafaxine a day. Then you could break that tab in half and take one in morning and one around 4:00pm.
I mentioned about switching from Effexor Xr 225mg (which on my own I lowered to 150mg) He said that Effexor XR affects two different areas of the body whereas Zoloft only affects one area. Now he mentioned NOTHING about keep taking the Effexor Xr in lower does while I make hte switch to Zoloft. Am I supposed to just switch right over to Zoloft and discontinue the Effexor Xr??
has anyone made it thru the effexor xr withdrawals with success, if so please give detalis on how you did it, i will be starting to taper off of it soon, i really would like to stay off of this drug once im completely off of it,----i know everyone is different but theres got to be some info on how to do this------
