abilify weight gain why

I am terrifed of putting on weight as I feel that a med that would make me gain weight would just depress me even more as I would no longer feel good about myself; thus defeating the purpose. Can you please tell me what the likelyhood is of a person gaining weight on Abilify and some suggestions of other mood stabilizers that would not cause this side effect? I mean, I am all for feeling better but not at the expense of my self esteem.

What you are noticing is a standard side effect of atypical antipsychotics which are metabolic changes leading to weight gain. That will happen with all of them although Abilify is the least likely but its still common. There's a new one about to hit the market but I believe its has the same side effect profile but we'll see when it comes out.

When I looked up weight gain and bipolar medications, Abilify was at the bottom of the list for weight gain, Geodon people gained the least then Abilify. I'm on 2mg. of Abilify and in the begining you tend to feel sleepy, that's why they start you on it at bedtime. I would be surprised if Abilify caused a racing heart but you definately have to tell your doc about that. I was also on Wellbutrin and had to come off because it caused to much anxiety.

if it is a problem for you though they have came out with quite a few newer anti psych drugs ex latuda abilify which are recognized a having a weight gain side effect but from what i noticed about latuda is the opposite as for abilify i have never taken it.

Yes Seroquel like all currently available antipsychotics can cause weight gain and the potential of diabetes. I did gain weight on Seroquel as I did with other antipsychotics. You could ask your doctor about a specific diet that would help you cut back sugar and carbohydrates and help reduce weight and regular exercise is essential as well.

I really need something to help me with the depressed side but I do not want more weight gain issues. Why do we have to trade off being thin and unhappy to being overweight if there is to be any chance of happiness. Ahh if we only could answer that question.

I know for a fact many people say Abilify makes them gain extreme amounts of weight. I was wondering if anyone know about taking the bupropion and abilify would still cause such an increase in weight gain? I want to get better but it’s so hard to get this phobia of gaining weight out of my head.

has anyone used this drug? pdoc is talking about adding it into combo but i have read that it causes a lot of weight gain. don't want any more meds like this. abilify is bad enough.

It does make sense to take Abilify during the day if its keeping a person awake at night as it can be activating. If not it won't make a difference as regards weight gain. Abilify is the least likely out of the antipsychotics to cause weight gain. I have posted about the antipsychotics in development that won't do this but they still are not approved medications yet. If you were diagnosed with bipolar with psychotic features you need an antipsychotic.

She gave us both wellbutrin that does the same as far as helping but NO weight gain.Im.so hapy she knew about abilfy.She said because Abilify is pretty new thats why it hasnt been fixed.

I also need Seroquel to sleep decently (have been an insomniac since childhood), and it would be the perfect medication for insomnia if not for the weight gain problem. To make things worse, a few years ago I was also on Abilify. I was fat and happy for a while there. When the doctor changed & took me off the Abilify, I was astonished that I lost about 20 pounds without changing anything.

My first experience with Abilify was an abnormal one (so please do not take this too seriously, as it seems I was an exception), since it threw me into a manic state; however, my Psychiatrist has come to the conclusion that I'm just wired completely different. After being weaned off the stuff for about a week, my Psychiatrist put me back on it, but a fourth of what I was taking.

I recently went off Depakote due to weight gain of 50 pounds. I was started on Lamictal and within the first two weeks gained another 5-6 pounds. I stopped that immediately. My doctor wants me to start on Abilify but I declined after I read the side effects. Has anyone had any uncontrolled movements, weight gain, tardive dyskinesia, etc. with this medication. If so, please let me know. I really need a medication to replace the ones I went off of but my doctor is giving me no other choices.

t supposed to cause that much weight gain. I thought it was weight neutral but I could be wrong. I had an adverse effect to that one and started to lose too much weight. I am waiting for my psychiatrists appointment to hopefully change to abilify. Lamictal is a good drug in my books. It has helped me the most.

I do require an antipsychotic and a mood stabilizer both as I have schizoaffective disorder but if a person has bipolar they are of course other choices as regards mood stabilizers but it depends on the specific person and their reaction to the medication and how they experience the side effects. Abilify does have less of a potential for weight gain than other atypical antipsychotics though but it still can happen.

I know that abilify helps you have an appetite and gain weight and my son is only 56lbs and 11yrs old...

Lightheadedness and uncontrollable shaking are side effects of Abilify. Some other ones are weight gain, nausea and dizziness. Prozac interacts with Abilify and may increase the concentration of Abilify in your body. That may be the reason why you are experiencing the side effects. If you just started on Abilify then you should go talk to your doctor and let him know that you cannot tolerate the side effects and be put on something else.

Risperdal is an antipsychotic and may not work completely as a mood stabilizer . ok so i have bipolar 1 disorder and i stopped taking abilify on my own because of my weight gain and my doctor said i have to take sumthing so he put me on geodon...i took it last nite and i woke up this morning light headed the i took the pill i was surpose to this morning and it made me feel worst like i was about to faint so i went to sleep and i slept for 6 hours and 30 minutes and im still sleepy so i mite have to go back to abilify...

I am on seroquel and abilify, and so far they havent caused any weight gain for me, or weight loss! I was on geodon at one point to, but that was a nightmare! You will have to sit back, and see what happens. If you really dont want the weight gain, then exercising should definitely help! I cant say for sure either, what the result will be!

ALSO, after 8 yrs on Abilify, had unexplained weight gain of 15-20 lbs. in spite of good diet, reg exercise. Now weaning off Abilify due to wt. gain and titrating up on Lamictal for obvious mood swings. Idk, Abilify worked well for me with Zoloft for approx 8 years. Good luck to you!

Hi, it is great you found us :). I am sure you will get more answers related to meds you are taking. I do not have experience with your drugs however have experience with a weight loss. I am on Citalopram ( misdiagnosed for ages as depressed) and now also on Lamictal. Lamictal should not cause a weight gain. I do not have any side effects but I am on very low dose as the start with this drug has to be very slow. I was also always size 12 but put on after having a baby.
