Abilify weight gain drug

Common Questions and Answers about Abilify weight gain drug

abilify

Avatar n tn Yes Seroquel like all currently available antipsychotics can cause weight gain and the potential of diabetes. I did gain weight on Seroquel as I did with other antipsychotics. You could ask your doctor about a specific diet that would help you cut back sugar and carbohydrates and help reduce weight and regular exercise is essential as well.
Avatar f tn aripripazole (abilify) and ziprasidone (geodon) are 2 other atypical antipsychotics like your olanzapine (zyprexa). nobody neither your pdoc can tell their effect on you, it's all trial and error everybody manifests different effect and side effect. he/she only prescribed them to you because they don't make you put on weight gain contrary to zyprexa, that's all.
Avatar f tn I know for a fact many people say Abilify makes them gain extreme amounts of weight. I was wondering if anyone know about taking the bupropion and abilify would still cause such an increase in weight gain? I want to get better but it’s so hard to get this phobia of gaining weight out of my head.
1499921 tn?1308446605 I do require an antipsychotic and a mood stabilizer both as I have schizoaffective disorder but if a person has bipolar they are of course other choices as regards mood stabilizers but it depends on the specific person and their reaction to the medication and how they experience the side effects. Abilify does have less of a potential for weight gain than other atypical antipsychotics though but it still can happen.
Avatar f tn I was supposed to start on 10 mg of Abilify, but my doctor decided to start me at 5 mg at night with the Cymbalta and Valium. I haven't noticed any changes except for extreme tiredness. I can't seem to get enough sleep. I know that the Abilify causes you to be sleepy, but most of the medications do that until they get in your system. I'm sure my doctor will increase the Abilify in the next two weeks.
Avatar n tn I have been gaining weight and the doctor said that I probably would loose weight on this drug. I am going to stop the drug as I am not going to gain all this weight. Please let me know why this if happening?
Avatar f tn t supposed to cause that much weight gain. I thought it was weight neutral but I could be wrong. I had an adverse effect to that one and started to lose too much weight. I am waiting for my psychiatrists appointment to hopefully change to abilify. Lamictal is a good drug in my books. It has helped me the most.
Avatar f tn I recently went off Depakote due to weight gain of 50 pounds. I was started on Lamictal and within the first two weeks gained another 5-6 pounds. I stopped that immediately. My doctor wants me to start on Abilify but I declined after I read the side effects. Has anyone had any uncontrolled movements, weight gain, tardive dyskinesia, etc. with this medication. If so, please let me know. I really need a medication to replace the ones I went off of but my doctor is giving me no other choices.
Avatar f tn Lamictal is in a completely different drug class than Abilify, and tends to be very weight neutral. All of the atypical antipsychotics, like Abilify, can cause weight gain, although some are less likely to. That drug class is known for it. Lamictal is an anticonvulsant, and a lot of those (except for depakote) are weight neutral. I don't think you have anything to worry about in the weight department. Make sure to take your Lamictal exactly as prescribed.
599945 tn?1240382354 healthy and still get weight gain, then when i go off the drug the weight just goes without me having to do anything extra at all. so if weight gain is a side effect, i think i'll have to refuse it!
552011 tn?1239333219 I am currently taking 200 mg Zoloft per day. 5mg Abilify. 300 mg Doxipin, 12-1800 mg Nurontin and 10 to 20 mg of Ambien, and 1-2 mg of somethinf to relax me. I have 2 questions. 1st, with all this antidepressent medication why am I still walking on the edge of life and death. I have way more dark days than light onesl 2nd. i feel like I am drowning when I take all this medication. I feel like I have fluid on my lungs and I get really short of breath.
202665 tn?1248806733 I do know for me that Risperdal and Seroquel had a better mood stabilization effect but of course they were more likely to cause weight gain and sedation but each person of course has their own reaction to each specific medication.
5032487 tn?1365824021 I use Abilify which is supposed to be weight neutral, but I gained 35 lbs when I first took it. Now I have a solution to prevent weight gain no matter what I am on. I am on a grain- free diet and I rarely get hunger pangs. If I do, it is because I am truly hungry and need to eat. I have to try to eat enough calories in a day. Give it a try.
585414 tn?1288941302 Abilify works in a manner somewhat different from the other antipsychotics and Saphris was based on Abilify (Serotonin-Dopamine agonists) so it should have a similar side effect profile of having less sedation and less of a potential for weight gain and diabetes (though all current antipsychotics can cause this). If you want to know the full side effect profile as well as beneficial results go to the medication website.
Avatar f tn My son did well on Abilify, there wasn't a huge weight gain. That came with Risperdal. That and zyprexa are the big weight gain meds.
Avatar f tn The other atypical antipsychotics (also used as mood stabilizers) that have less of a potential of weight gain are Abilify, Fanapt and Saphris. You could ask your psychiatrist about those options. I had similar reactions to Zeldox but each person responds differently to each medication.
Avatar n tn t work well), Risperadol, Seroquel, Ziprexa (you gain weight just looking at this drug), Clozaril. I think that is the list, but I feel like I am missing one. I've been on all of them except Abilify and Clozaril (which isn't used as much because it has a freaky white blood cell side effect) as it has just recently become available in Canada. All of them give me side effects but the Geodone (Zeldox here in Canada) has the least side effects of the bunch so I take it.
Avatar f tn Hello, I've been on paxil for about 4 yrs,for my anxiety and depression, it has worked wonders for my anxiety, but lately my depression has got worse and just feeling uneasy, unmotivated. I go to my doctors in a couple of days and want to try a new depression med,but am afraid my anxiety will come back. What meds should I try. Ive been on Lexapro twice first time it worked quit it and started it again when I had my first anxiety issues, didn't work for my depression.
1565420 tn?1304572548 This is an old post, so you might want to start a new one. No, it doesn't cause thyroid problems, but all antidepressants can cause weight gain -- it's one of the most common side effects. What you're describing is a possible auto-immune disorder called Hashimoto's, but it sounds like the diagnosis isn't final yet.
1052851 tn?1307741160 Abilify still has the possibility to cause weight gain as well as anxiety, insomnia and agitation. As you said it is trial and error and the doctor is basing her decisions on her clinical expertise on how to treat you in the best manner possible as well as trying to minimize the side effects. Quetiapine and Zeldox are not recommended to take together so you should check with your doctor regarding that.
Avatar f tn It does make sense to take Abilify during the day if its keeping a person awake at night as it can be activating. If not it won't make a difference as regards weight gain. Abilify is the least likely out of the antipsychotics to cause weight gain. I have posted about the antipsychotics in development that won't do this but they still are not approved medications yet. If you were diagnosed with bipolar with psychotic features you need an antipsychotic.
202665 tn?1248806733 I am currently on Abilify alone for mood stabilization. I do find it activating rather than sedating. I however wish I had something really activating to get me up out of my depression and super low to no energy which it doesn't seem to help me with.
Avatar n tn It is the antipsychotic least likely to cause weight gain. It can work added to any medication your psychiatrist thinks is appropriate. If you've had trouble tolerating Depakoate, Lamictal is another option which is less likely to cause weight gain and cognitive confusion. You could ask your psychiatrist about that.
