Common Questions and Answers about Abilify vs risperdal autism

abilify

16638194 tn?1449934941 I am in desperate need of some insight regarding medication for Autism and ADHD. My son is 7 years old. He started out on Risperdal when he was 4 but we quickly took him off because he quickly ballooned by 15 lbs. in 1 month. We eventually ended up on Abilify and Tenex (Guanfacine) and he's been taking that combination for about 3 years. Now we are at the point where those two meds were not working at all and we were already at the approved dosage limits.
2010625 tn?1329372056 I may have to go off my Risperdal. My doctor is checking my hormone levels because my periods have stopped and I am lactating. He said if my hormone levels are high I can either add Abilify or replace the Risperdal altogether. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any medications that I could replace the Risperdal with. I don't go see my psychiatrist for another 2 months.
Avatar f tn This is only my own opinion. But for me any kind of medication is the last resort, especially whilst their brains are growing. All medicines have side effects. Some of the medication prescribed for autism/ADHD can have permanent effects such as tics etc. Also, you don't have a diagnosis yet, so how do they know what to prescribe? I know other parents who have had hormes prescribed to help with sleep.
Avatar f tn Posted this on community forum also. My grandson who is 14 years old came home yesterday in such an emotional state. He sobbed so hard and began hitting his chest saying "No Hitting" as he looked his mom in the eyes.
Avatar n tn If your psychiatrist can write up why Abilify works better for you that can be appealed. Abilify is somewhat different than Risperdal as it is a SDA (Serotonin Dopamine Agonist) and as well it is the least likely out of the antipsychotics to cause weight gain and diabetes and less sedating. If it has helped you better or caused less side effects for you than Risperdal your psychiatrist needs to write a letter documenting why.
Avatar f tn He was diagnosed with bipolar and then also with ADHD he takes risperdal for bipolar and adderall for adhd. The adderall has been wonderful it really helped a lot the risperdal i am not so sure as he still gets very angry and aggressive he has also been recently diagnosed with social anxiety disorder.
642393 tn?1227032656 I've taken Abilify for yrs & love it. I have none of the side effects I had on other drugs. Try it!
Avatar m tn my doctor discontinued risperdal because it caused milk in my breast. that was june 8.......... well i still got milk in my breast.... now what?
Avatar n tn We just increased both of them as he has been having problems and school and has been oppositional at home. It seems like a few of those meds are treating the same symptoms (abilify, risperdal and intuniv). My son has tried all of them, but not at the same time. Hope you get the help you are looking for. I know how hard and scary it is to medicate your child!
Avatar f tn So yesterday Abilify(2mg in am) was added to my 600mg(3002xd)Lithium, 1mg(1xd)Xanax and of course 50mg(1/2 or 1@bedtime)..Has anyone had any experience with Abilify?f it's something bad..nevermind.
440120 tn?1211724496 The atypical antipsychotics (Risperdal through Abilify, Fanapt and Saphris) have a safer side effect profile than the typicals (Thorazine through Haldol) in that they have half the statistical potential of causing tardive dyskinesia (a long term side effect which is a movement disorder of all current antipsychotics except for Clozaril). They also have far more of a mood stabilization effect and have been specifically FDA approved for this purpose.
Avatar n tn I guess my basic question is, if my doctor switched me to Abilify, what would the Abilify be replacing - the Depakote, or the Risperdal, or both? Also, could I take the Abilify at night or is it likely to interrupt my sleep? I am overweight with borderline high cholesterol and drink a lot of sugary sodas. While not diabetic, I am always afraid I will some day soon be diagnosed with that.

Avatar f tn I gained 6lbs in 5 days when I increased my dose of risperdal. My psych put me on a med called Metfomin. It's technically for pre-diabetes, but it works by changing how your body uses and stores calories. It might be worth asking you p doc about it or a similar medication. It might mean that you'd be able to stay on your current medications, and stop gaining, and maybe start losing some of the weight.
Avatar m tn should the 2mg dose of Risperdal taken am or pm? Problem with falling asleep. Other meds, 600 mg Lithium 2x a day and 1000 Depakote 2 times a day.
Avatar f tn My 8 year old son has adhd and autism. Hes not violent towards other children but is very violent towards himself. He starts occupational therapy next week and just started seeing a psychiatrist a month ago. His next appt is Thursday morning and the doctor is wanting to put him on abilify or resperdil and I was wondering if anyone has used either of these and if they helped or had any bad side effects.
1806584 tn?1316208037 t be replacing the Abilify with another antipsychotic though, risperdal and zyprexa worked horribly for me. This is more of an experiment to see if I can survive on Lamotrigine alone. And thanks, I definitely will take care of myself.
2010625 tn?1329372056 Different people has different side effects. I take Abilify (its not Ambilify) and it hasn't caused any weight gain and helps with depression. Abilify has caused me to have akathisia (restless movements of legs/feet). I take propranolol for it and found that it also is used for anxiety without being a benzo. It is a beta blocker which is primarily used to lower blood pressure.
Avatar n tn my 4 year old with autism was on risperdal, he had some levels run high so his dr decided to switch him to Tenex...he took his last risperdal 1mg tablet 3 times/day on friday night 11-12-10...he started the tenex 1/2 of a 1mg tablet twice/day saturday morning. since sunday he has been very irritable and aggressive, with very frequent outburst of screaming constantly, hitting himself in the head and bitting, pinching, hitting, kicking, pushing, and scratching himself and others...
1499921 tn?1308446605 I found Abilify somewhat helpful in this regard and all atypical antipsychotics from Risperdal to Abilify are FDA approved as mood stabilizers. However they all have the potential of weight gain. I do require an antipsychotic and a mood stabilizer both as I have schizoaffective disorder but if a person has bipolar they are of course other choices as regards mood stabilizers but it depends on the specific person and their reaction to the medication and how they experience the side effects.
Avatar n tn This question is in regard to a pre-adolescent boy with autism. The Risperdal no longer controls his behaviors; he is laughing hysterically all the time, running, is violent and teachers are afraid of him. He is non-verbal and is a large boy for his age of 9 years and is entering puberty. The medicine does apparently help him sleep, but that is the only benefit we are now seeing. Thank you for your reply. This discussion is related to <a href='http://www.medhelp.
Avatar f tn I have a five year old who was diagnosed at 2 with High Functioning Autism. The past year or so though hes been showing signs of ADD or ADHD. His Dr has prescribed him Risperdal because and medication isnt something she just randomly hands out so I know he needs it. I just have a few questions that wont be answered until he sees another Dr which I am waiting for a referral to. My questions are: Whats the difference between ADD/ADHD?
Avatar m tn Between now and then, I have been diagnosed with OCD, Social anxiety disorder, GAD, major depressive disorder, ADHD, and most recently, aspergers/high functioning autism. I have also been told by a highly rated local psychiatrist that I have the worst anxiety he has ever seen. No therapist or psychologist can help, some even say out loud that I “perplex” them or to look somewhere else.
Avatar f tn my son dustin who is 10 has been taking 4mg of risperdal for the treatment of bipolar-mood disorders for about 3 years his pshyciatrist about 2 weeks ago cut the dose in half to try to wean him off slowly over a two month period the past week he has been real emotional could someone please tell me if there is another type of medication that works as well as resperdal without any of the harmful side effects of resperdal
Avatar n tn my dr changed me from abilify and serquel to trazone and saphris. i was ok for about 3 days then started to feel sick, nausa chills muscle aches ect ect. i don't think it was a virus. but my question----can you have withdraws going of one type of meds and going on another that is simalar. i think going off serquel cold turkey and abilify is what did me in or maybe side effects from the new meds. i took the old meds yesterday and not the new ones and already feel better.
Avatar m tn I am so sorry to hear you're having problems. I completely understand because I have had similar problems with meds in the past. I would suggest talking to your doc and asking for a change in meds or see if there is another drug that you can take in addition to combat the mood problems. I take 100mg of Pristiq and 2 mg of Abilify.
