Common Questions and Answers about Abilify side effects akathisia

abilify

Avatar f tn 00 pm. with benztropine .05mg the same amount of pills for the side effects of abilify; however that only worked for a while. Then my psychiatrist with experience for 46 years in the mental health field told me to take Benadryl for the akathisia attacks. This worked great for a long time; however eventually it did not work anymore either. Then I discovered from an answer to prayer to take Queen's Delight.
Avatar f tn I take propranolol, which is primarily used for high blood pressure and anxiety and also takes care of akathisia. I have no other side effects from Abilify. It has worked well for me in dealing with depression.
Avatar f tn It started working within 2 weeks and my depression decreased dramatically. One common side effect of Abilify is akathisia, a restless need to move. I have that but added propranolol and it stopped it completely with no other side effects.
2010625 tn?1329372056 I have akathisia from Abilify but it works for me most of the time so I didn't want to go off it. My pdoc added propranolol, a beta blocker, 60mg a day, that stopped the akathisia almost completely. Propranolol is actually mainly for high blood pressure but has "side effects" that takes care of akathisia and anxiety. The only problem I have from it is orthostatic hypotension (dizziness upon standing) but all I have to do is stop and lean over for a few seconds and it passes.

I take300mg of effexor XR.We both feel like the meds we r taking r helpong to keep us out of a severely depresse state but know we can feel better.
Avatar m tn the only thing that had a significant effect on reducing the extreme akathesia i got from abilify was cogentin (Benztrop) but unfortunately the benztop relaxed my eyes to the point that my normally perfect vision became incredibly blurry and i had to wear reading glasses to focus. Dry mouth was another annoying side effect from benztrop... but of course these side effects were nothing compared to the stress of akathesia. i think akathesia was even worse than my psychosis.
Avatar f tn I am currently on Geodone because that was the one with the most tolerable side effects. I get bad agitation, shake to the point I had one person assume I had Parkinson's disease, and have lost a considerable amount of weight to the point I am down to a size four when I should be closer to a size six. Needless to say I really want to get off the Geodone. I also have Chronic Kidney Disease so taking more meds would be a bad idea. I am wondering about Abilify instead of Geodone.
3122467 tn?1342138836 I have akathisia from Abilify. To deal with it, I take a beta blocker, propranolol, and it works beautifully. Not only does it take care of the akathisia it also treats anxiety. Once i ran out of propranolol because it hadn't arrived from the mail order pharmacy and the akathisia came back so I know two things... I still have it and propranolol stops it.
Avatar f tn What's akathisia?
1696867 tn?1312609591 They put her on Lithium and then added abilify a week later. The abilify gave her horrible side effects and I never want to see my daughter in that condition again! I detest the drug Abilify. It is a reckless drug in my opinion. I have been prescribed Lamictal now for 3 years. It is the right med for me. I am not on the floor with depression and do not gain weight. I wish some could challenge their docs.
2010625 tn?1329372056 I have tried several different antipsychotics and keep getting bad side effects with them that have been so bad I can't take them. I have been on seroquel, risperdal, geodon, abilify, and currently on latuda. On the latuda if I take more than 40mgs I get akathisia real bad, but on the 40mgs I start rapid cycling. My doc said I could try saphris, but I am sick of trying these antipsychotics. He said then the next option would be to try lithium. I am currently on lamictal 200mgs, latuda 40mgs.
Avatar n tn I recently started taking Abilify and am experiencing uncontrolled shaking and light-headedness. What are the side effects of Abilify and are these a couple of them. Should I try something else to help with my depression. THe Psych. said that this in concert with my prozac should help me out. Thanks for your help.
Avatar n tn t even metabolise abilify so it took like 90 days or so for the side effects to even begin to lessen. It was absolute hell from the hour it was given. The only way I made it through it was some knowledge of oddball things inluding illicit dopamine drugs. Anyway the akathesia never went away. Like I said it has been over a year. I now take amantadine and requip and klonopin. Sometimes that doesn't even work.
Avatar n tn Usually initial side effects wear off after two weeks.
1134609 tn?1269272200 I thought that they were causing me to cycle harder, but I have realized that I am getting the akathisia side effect from them.. When the sun is down, they bring up my mood, but when it's bright out, I get very agitated.. All of these drugs have this side effect as they work on dopamine. I am at a loss right now; has anyone else had this problem? I am slowly running out of medications... I guess I could take Seroquel as needed, on those down days, but even 12.
Avatar n tn There is some confusion with akathisia in that some people confuse it with tardive dyskinesia, a long-term, even permanent movement disorder that comes from dopamine blocking medications generally after long-term use. But akathisia is in a different category of side effects; it is usuallly a problem during the early use of a med and it goes away quickly after stopping the med. I have to wonder, therefore, if you are truly having akathisia of whether something else is going on.
Avatar f tn She said that a lot of people are able to manage their Bipolar with Abilify alone- if they tolerate it. I was happy to give it a try, but I quickly developed severe akathisia, or what I called 'itchy muscles'. It was just uncomfortable. Not everyone who takes Abilify gets it, though.
1255530 tn?1269867619 Yes these would be side effects of concern. Abilify and the related SDA antipsychotics can at times cause heart irregularities. Having trouble breathing (potentially) and having stiffness in your neck or back could be due to temporary movement disorders (if dystonia is left untreated a person could have trouble breathing, for that reason its best to have a side effect pill with you at all times, check that with your doctor).
574118 tn?1305135284 If you give one med up due to its side effects, then by substituting another one you get another worse side efect. True i have it from a long time such that I can't tell when exactly but it increased lately. Strange the letter says also depakote Sure there are others here who have it. It's hazardous if i cut my seroquel.
Avatar f tn Deplin seems to be an anti-depressant booster, and Abilify could cause the twitching. It does take a while for it to get out of the system. If after a month off the drugs, and the twitching is still there, you migh want to consult with a psychiatrist.
