There are boxed warnings on the labels (also you could go to the medication website as well) stating to use caution about the use of antipsychotics in people who are elderly especially people with dementia. It would be worthwhile to see a neurologist who specializes in gerontology. There are medications specifically designed to treat dementia that might be able to be used without these concerns of which they would have more knowledge of.
Generally (it states this on the package insert) anti-psychotics are used with caution in people that are elderly so his psychiatrist is probably seeing whether he absolutely needs it or not. Of course if any psychotic symptoms return if a medication is adjusted or discontinued bring it to the psychiatrist's attention.
First I would like to know who perscribed Ativan to you for depression. And why they have kept you on if for "years."
Ativan is NOT an antidepressant and has no affinity for that disorder.
It's a short acting benzodiazipine. (Antianxiety)
The main uses for Ativan are anxiety, irritability in psychiatric or organic disorders, preoperatively, insomnia, and as an adjunct in endoscopic procedures.
Elderly people with psychosis related to dementia (for example, an inability to perform daily activities as a result of increased memory loss), treated with antipsychotic medicines including ABILIFY, are at an increased risk of death compared to placebo. ABILIFY is not approved for the treatment of people with dementia-related psychosis (see Boxed WARNING).
That most probably is prolactin elevation which can cause female hormones to increase in males so that there is sexual dysfunction and pain in the nipple area. Having discharge from the nipples can occur too. I did experience that when I was on standard antipsychotics and its a common side effect. It depends on its severity. Having breast milk is rare but that can happen. It should go away in time. However keep your doctor informed and they will follow up.
Having not wanting to deal with the symptoms I was switched to 20mg of Abilify. They told me the abilify would not cause any problems of sexual dysfunction, but after I started taking it the problems seemed to get worse and worse. It's got to the point where it's difficult if not sometimes impossible to obtain an erection and even harder to ejaculate. I am wondering what I can do or take to reverse these side effects?
we have tried several meds. currently he is on 50 mg of vyvanse, 40 mg of citalopram and 2mg of abilify a day. his behavior is beyond horrible. should i just take him off meds?

Last August of 2015 I stopped taking Abilify, after taking it for a year because it caused me to shake a lot, and I was worried about getting tardive dyskinesia. Also, last year I've been working hard animating and drawing daily, because i want to be an animator.

Personally, I liked abilify- i had that and PRN of seroqoel.
Hi. 5'10" Gent, and brand spankin newbie to this site. i just turned 56 in April. In my journal August. 12, 2013, I recorded wgt. 247.5 lb, BP 157/101, severe depression & anxiety with heaart palpitations and mid-nightime panic attacks. Also using CPAP setting of 14cm for severe sleep apnea, and suffered almost daily migraines. Plus my triglicerides were, as my dr put it, "through the roof!
Prozac interacts with Abilify and may increase the concentration of Abilify in your body. That may be the reason why you are experiencing the side effects. If you just started on Abilify then you should go talk to your doctor and let him know that you cannot tolerate the side effects and be put on something else.
Hi, I have been on Abilify for many years now. I have tried in the past to get off of it, but depression seems to hit right away. I stopped it again a few weeks ago and now am really depressed and just want to cry and stay in bed(esp since I do not even want to get dressed) am going to start back up on the Abilify to get back to being even. Just didn't want to have to stay on med for the rest of my life. I felt good right after I stopped it, more energy, more motivation, then this.
To check you sugar levels and cholesterol, because if you are suspectible Abilify could cause a spike in those levels.
