Its rare but possible for a child to have bipolar disorder. If he is diagnosed with Asperger's that is a developmental disability and although those can have behavioral problems that can be severe they don't generally respond to medication like psychiatric disabilities such as bipolar or ADHD but both diagnoses can occur together. They need to provide specific diagnoses as for follow up and treatment and you should discuss this further with them.
1 mg of Clonidine. The stipulation was to give my son 1/2 a pill of Abilify for 7 days then the full 5 mg dose for the next 7 days and we would meet with the Psychiatrist again after the two weeks. I read every bit of the side effects paper work given with the Abilify. My son after 2 doses of the 1/2 a pill of Abilify is having tremors. The paper work I was given do NOT state this as a side effect but some websites did state this was a side effect for children taking this medication.
What might take 5 years for an adult is taking way less time for your young child. Though the self harm and insomnia, I can see how you have no choice. On the other hand, at the rate doctors are giving her meds, my fear is she will have no options less by the time she is 10, when natural hormones will kick in and possibly amplify the effects of her issues.
So, my kid would have been put on meds had I tried to make him fit in or sit in a chair in school.
I think you have it backwards -- drugs can only help so much, it's therapy that is a cure if there is a cure. It's also well recognized that most childhood anxiety is of a different nature than the chronic anxiety that affects adults. These meds were never tested on children nor approved for children, so are used off-label. I'd do anything to avoid meds for adults, and even more so for children.
They are kind of like Occupational Therapists that see the child weekly in all different environments, they use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy type methods for children, but they also are great support to the family aswell, acting as advocates and can refer to other people if necessary.

Are you sure about your son's Abilify dose? That is a high dose for a child so young. If the medication is not effective, the situation shold be re-assessed. Relative to the ADHD, a psychostimulant can be employed alongside a medication like Abilify, but the major goal should be the mood-related issues. When the mood is stable the ADHD can be addressed. Last August of 2015 I stopped taking Abilify, after taking it for a year because it caused me to shake a lot, and I was worried about getting tardive dyskinesia. Also, last year I've been working hard animating and drawing daily, because i want to be an animator.
If he truly displays these conditions, he may well require pharmacological treatment, so it is not a good idea to take him off. However, having said that, Vyvanse is an unusual choice for such a young child, and Abilify is an unusual choice to treat generalized anxiety. I would suggest that you obtain a second opinion.
ODD, that is almost never diagnosed at the age of five and, in any case, there is no single medication approach to its treatment. Volatility can certainly be addressd with Abilify, but it is not usually prescribed for a child of five. Most important, the recommended intervention re: ODD is a sytematic behavior managment plan. It may well be that your son will require a self-contained special education program designed for children who display serious behavioral difficulties.
There is no happy medium with her, she is either extremely happy or extremely angry and upset. Things that would bring most children her age happiness and joy do not for her. She always tends to find something wrong or a downside. She is very set in her ways and does not like structure,function,or discipline. She also becomes very aggressive with her older sister and little brother when she is in these mindsets. To top it all off about 3 years ago her dad was murdered.

I was diagnosed with depression at a young age given Zoloft and felt high as a kite. Later I was diagnosed as bipolar. I am now on 5mg of Lexapro and 200mg of Lamictal. My psychiatrist wanted me off the Lexapro as it can cause manic episodes. I was taken off but the severity of the anxiety was too much to handle. I have been on antidepressants for years.
I have had manic episodes before. The last one was brought on by stress.
