Abilify for psychosis

Common Questions and Answers about Abilify for psychosis

abilify

Avatar n tn t be a problem taking SAMe with Abilify... but SAMe is definitely something for your wife to discuss with her psychiatrist. Sorry to hear about her experiences with Zyprexa. It can be an amazingly effective drug but it also has some very difficult side effects.
1701851 tn?1338085791 I've been on abilify for about 3 weeks now. mostly I've just felt better, more acutely aware, able to focus. however, today i felt like lead and my nose got really stuffed up and i have a dull headache. I'm quite sure it's from the abilify. i wouldn't stop taking the med until you speak to your doc, though. as for me, as long as this episode is few and far between, abilify is working for me.
Avatar f tn I just went back on Abilify 2 days ago after being off of it for a week due to tremors (with other meds). I also can't figure out which way my mood is swinging. It seems to be a bit of both mania and depression. But i didn't think psychosis existed in mixed episodes. I am so frustrated. I just want things to work out and they aren't right now. This was just really to vent, but if anyone has any advice in the meantime, well that would be great. Also i have an appt.
899491 tn?1243773627 Sleep is interesting while being on Abilify. When I do go to sleep it's a deep sleep for two hours then I wake up. This pattern goes on throughout the night until morning. I do get my eight hours of sleep. When I started Abilify I couldn't wait for my next dose to increase. I started at 5mg then up to 10mg then I can't wait for my next appointment for the next higher dose. Could this drug be addictive?
Avatar f tn I take it for psychosis as it is an antipsychotic and also an antidepressant. It has worked better than Geodon for my negative symptoms but risperdal seemed like it was going to work even better for this but unfortunately I could not handle it. Geodon treated my psychotic symptoms better however. It doesn't work as good as I'd like it to but it's better than nothing. I could not tell you how it works for depression as I am not depressed.
Avatar f tn t you just wish sometimes that there was a magic pill that worked for everyone...anyways thank you both for your comments and input! i greatly appreciate it!
899491 tn?1243773627 My bipolar symptoms was in remission for a very long time since 1994! I do have occasional problems but its easily fixed with adjusting my med's. But this episode was different. When I had my relaspe all the familiar sensations reared its ugly head and its very frightening handling this monster inside me. After experiencing the good, bad and ugly of mania I slid into a deep depression. I felt that familiar disjointed feeling like I did not own my own body.
Avatar n tn Lots of combinations to try and it an be find just the right thing to function. My son was activated on abilify and found seroquel worked for his needs better. The good news is that the activation began immediately so we didn't waste time trying to find out if it would work or not as it wasn't a fit for him. So much of this is trial and error. Anyway, thanks for posting your experience!
5544493 tn?1369608788 re BP I or II, and whether your main problems are depression, mania, or a lot of both, and whether you have psychosis in the mix. Lamotrigine and carbamazepine are generics, for the record, and Abilify and Seroquel are still under patent and so there aren't any generics yet. Anyway, lamotrigine (brand name Lamictal) is one of the best for BP II where depression is the main issue, although it's approved for BPI.
1255530 tn?1269867619 I only share basically half of your diagnosis but I am on Abilify currently for psychosis. It works better than Geodon did in different ways but worse in others but I like it better than Geodon worked for me. Namely Abilify has treated my paranoia and inability to express myself which Geodon never touched which ruined my quality of life significantly but it is not working as great for my hallucinations and things like that.
675718 tn?1530033033 ten years ago I was diagnosed with Schizophrenia paranoid type at UBH and my doctor Dr. Stowe I was introduced to abilify then Geodon resperdal finally Seroquel I still have this permanent psychosis meaning lifetime of meds commitment I'm on the good things in life I embraced it I'm still living I'm still alive tyvm MEDHELP !!!!
Avatar f tn I've been taking abilify for about 6 months now and I'm up to 20mg a day. It seems to be working but I'm not having the drowsy side effects that you speak of, but then I do take my bipolar meds at night, which seems to decrease any sleepiness I might have. Also my doctor prescribed a medication called Provigil to help counteract the drowsiness caused by my medications because I do take several and all of them may cause drowsiness.
Avatar n tn Actually Ativan is more for anxiety and Abilify is more for depression but it can also help with anxiety. This is common practice, trust in your doctor. Best wishes.
Avatar f tn The target dose for Abilify varies considerably depending on what is being treated. For bipolar 1 (if you have ever had a manic episode) and schizophrenia it is probably 15 - 25 mg. For bipolar 2 and augmentation of an antidepressant for someone with non-bipolar depression it is probably 2 to 10 mg. Also, how long to wait to see the effect depends on what is being treated, for psychosis or mania I would expect results in no more than a week at any given dose.
1240654 tn?1268317515 I'm taking Abilify for psychosis and have had no side effects yet except it interrupts my sleep all the time.
Avatar f tn I just started back on Abilify and ambien (temporarily for sleep) after being off meds for 10 days. I am taking 10mg which is an increase from the 5mg that i was on. I was experiencing psychosis, paranoia, anxiety, and sleep deprivation. I'm not sure how my mood was at the time. When i went to my psychiatrist he mentioned Schizoaffective disorder but did not diagnose me with it.
Avatar n tn my son take 7.5 mg of abilify in the morning and 15 mg of zyprexa. when abitatlify started to take. he is talking to himselff. is it bad . is it induced psychosis. he was on zyprexa -. foe 5months. not much omprovement. how long it take to get better with these combinations.
1100992 tn?1262357216 All atypical antipsychotics are FDA approved as first line medications for bipolar. For psychosis, they are of course neccessary. For bipolar mood stabilizers could be used instead depending on what your psychiatrist thinks is going on. Speak to them about your concerns.
Avatar f tn I would make sure you are going to a pediatric psychiatrist even if you have to travel to do it (not a lot of them out there), and I would also ask for a brain scan if not already done to rule out any physical damage or brain tumor. Pediatric psychologists are more versed in what meds work on little bodies and appropriate doses. The reaction may not happen with other medications, or maybe a different class of medications like a mood stabilizer like lamotrigine.
574118 tn?1305135284 Nope I haven't been on an AD before, only antipsychotics for psychosis. I don't really need an antidepressant as I came to find out I have only experienced exaggerated sadness before (which I shut the door on and haven't experienced since for 5 or 6 months now) and never clinical depression.
Avatar f tn That means that in parts of the brain where the level of dopamine is low it boosts activity and in parts of the brain where the level is high (for instance, where mania and psychosis may be activated) it lowers activity. Geodon is more of a "typical" atypical in the sense that it is a pure D2 antagonist and what makes it "atypical" is that it also is a serotonin (5HT2) antagonist.
Avatar f tn For myself when I came off 150mg cold turkey i went through horrible withdrawl for 10-14 days the each day after that it got a little better it took around a month to totally stop having any effects. and I was back to normal. You can do it it seems impossible in the begining but It is only 1 month out of the rest of your life.
Avatar m tn Well he has to get blood test for a med he is on that is clozapine. Today a nures called and said his White blood count went down and absolute neutrophils. so they were low and they were in the past do to the meds. He can't be lowered brings out some more more bipolar and tourettes in him when lowered just a little. Hes been on it maybe when he was 12 or 14 im not sure cause i am younger then him im pretty sure he was the first kid in our county on it doctors said.
574118 tn?1305135284 My information is that all are given to prevent mania and reduce dopamine responsible for psychosis. Yet seroquel especially is given for depression too this is why it works as a mood stabilizer. Some say all atypical are the same but seroquel seems to be different from readings and at least it works for me. My combo is 75 seroquel + 1 risperidone + 1 stelazin (typical AP). It's weird and crazy usually one AP is enough.
575214 tn?1218040360 That's a fair amount of medication for a child. He may be reacting to the Concerta. That I'm not sure. Depakoate is a good mood stabilizer. But he's on two antipsychotic as well (Seroquel, Abilify). I have schizoaffective disorder and generally did not need more than one antipsychotic. Did they diagnose any form of psychosis in him? Benzotropine is a side effect pill.
505907 tn?1258369340 Before this I took a series of other mood stabilizing drugs and had the same dislike for them as Abilify - these drugs seem to want to treat my almost nonexistant mania (anxiety more prominant than hysterical joy) and undertreat my heavy depression symptoms. I feel flat lined and listless on Abilify and have since stopped taking it. Is there any drug more pointed towards we of the B.P. community with overriding angst and little of the fun stuff?
