Abilify for children with autism

Common Questions and Answers about Abilify for children with autism

abilify

Avatar f tn Abilify was just proven to treat the aggressiveness/irritability associated with autism spectrum disorders. ABA has been a Godsend for my son (he was dx as severely autistic at 26 months old, and boy oh boy have we had behavioral/aggression issues). That being said, when my son is on medication, he has weird reactions. Ibuprofen makes him crazy hyper (my daughter too). Steroids he is an absolute nightmare.
Avatar n tn Your added comment makes a very significant difference. Children with autism present a challenge because you cannot take for granted that the 'tried and true' methods of normal child behavior management will be effective. In any case, it's too early to be thinking about phamacological intervention. What is required is a thorough developmental evaluation, and part of this will be a medical workup. Children only very rarely (i.e., almost never) vomit on purpose.
Avatar n tn I am concerned about putting her on meds but also feel horrible for her and her tantrums have been unbearable (stemming from the obsessions) for our entire family. Is meds for this along with therapies for the other autism issues the right thing or should i think twice about putting her on meds?
973741 tn?1342342773 t get in to see the therapist soon, she needs to look for another one that is trained in dealing with autism. Actually, she needs to attend her self, because what she can do at home will be just as important. And, on the same note, the school also has to get involved. Oh, quick thought on meds. Glad he is not on risperdol! There are other anti-anxiety meds that the psyc could try on him that work well and don't have the weight gain issues.
Avatar f tn You are certainly not alone in this and emotionality is certainly not unique to children diagnosed with autism during the teenage years. I’m sure you want your grandson to be happy and healthy and affect changes like you are describing becomes even more difficult to deal with if the child is unable to tell you why he or she is upset.
Avatar f tn My 8 year old son has adhd and autism. Hes not violent towards other children but is very violent towards himself. He starts occupational therapy next week and just started seeing a psychiatrist a month ago. His next appt is Thursday morning and the doctor is wanting to put him on abilify or resperdil and I was wondering if anyone has used either of these and if they helped or had any bad side effects.
Avatar n tn 1 mg of Clonidine. The stipulation was to give my son 1/2 a pill of Abilify for 7 days then the full 5 mg dose for the next 7 days and we would meet with the Psychiatrist again after the two weeks. I read every bit of the side effects paper work given with the Abilify. My son after 2 doses of the 1/2 a pill of Abilify is having tremors. The paper work I was given do NOT state this as a side effect but some websites did state this was a side effect for children taking this medication.
744777 tn?1235089263 Thank you so much for responding to my post. My son is already seeing one of the Behavior Analyst that is listed on bacb.com. He is seeing her through the school system. Unfortunately we haven't seen very much improvement in his behavior. His Neurologist has just added a mood stabilizer to go along with him other meds. It's Abilify 5 mg. Hopefully this will help with some of the problems we have been facing. Thanks for you help, I very much appreciated it.
16638194 tn?1449934941 I am in desperate need of some insight regarding medication for Autism and ADHD. My son is 7 years old. He started out on Risperdal when he was 4 but we quickly took him off because he quickly ballooned by 15 lbs. in 1 month. We eventually ended up on Abilify and Tenex (Guanfacine) and he's been taking that combination for about 3 years. Now we are at the point where those two meds were not working at all and we were already at the approved dosage limits.
Avatar f tn Once a school starts his evaluation it becomes their need to treat him, not with meds, but with services and referrals. Meds are for his parents and doctors to decide only, and even then you still dont have to medicate your child. This is one of the rules in the handbook like jayncandi had said they are 100% correct on that!
Avatar n tn I posted a question on april 9th about symptoms Im noticing with my son,My son is 8 years old took him to mD today she spent over 1 hour with my son watching him asking questions (this is a new MD) in her observation she was pretty sure he has aspergers syndrome, I have to take him for a head ct, she also thought my son also has mild cp may be diabetic and hypothyroidism, Just waiting for blood results and scans she refered me to a psychiatrist,to do exam to confirm diagnoisI really been hit wit
536849 tn?1213582734 my nephew is two months away from turning four, he has shown signs of having autism, and is awaiting an appointment with a specialist he has recently begun eating his own feces...........could this be another sign of the autism?
Avatar n tn This is becoming a matter of embarrassment for him since other children do not understand and they question why he is doing it. He has asked his doctor about it and would like to know how he can stop it. I am trying to alter his diet since I have read this online as a possible cause, but actually we feel lost and would like to help him, but do not know where to start. He is on Clonidine and has been for awhile and it has not helped with the tics, for they seem to be getting worse.
6583170 tn?1385317938 There is no real link between MMR vaccine and autism. The only thing that was a cause for concern with childhood vaccinations was a mercury based preservative called Thimerosal. Studies Even showed that that didn't even have a direct link with an increased chance of autism developing in children but just to be safe the FDA banned it from being used in childhood vaccinations. I believe by 2001, if not earlier, all childhood vaccinations no longer contained that ingredient.

Avatar f tn I think it is really important to have the plan written by someone with significant experience in using applied behavior analysis with children with autism (you can search for board certified behavior analysts in your region at www.bacb.com). It is really crucial that the behavior intervention plan matches the reason your son is acting out. For example, some children act out when they are given difficult wotrk to do.
143123 tn?1274300825 I am trying to speak with parents or people with first hand experiences with autism. I have a 9 month old niece and my brother informed my mother that the pediatrician had mentioned she may be autistic because of the size of her head. Everything I have read states that autism is diagnosed through milestones, etc. and not by physical characteristics. My niece was born 5 weeks early, but didn't have to go to the NICU after birth.
Avatar n tn Neuroimaging work has found that children with autism aged 2 to 4 had larger brains with more cerebral and cerebellar white matter and more cerebral cortical grey matter than typically developing children of the same age (Courchesne et al., 2001). However, Carper and colleagues (e.g., Carper et al., 2002) found that children with autism gain substantially less grey and white matter in the frontal lobes from early to late childhood relative to typically developing children.
292592 tn?1234139424 After the tantrum he is very upset with himself and how he has behaved, but in the heat of the moment he just gets overwhelmed. And that is exactly what happens to children with autism. The mood and emotional control part of the brain is at the front, and with autistic children/adults this area of the brain gets totally flooded when something happens to upset them or make them angry. They cannot control it and they cannot stop it.
Avatar f tn His friends get bored with him, even his cousins that he was once closer to as children are getting bored with him, , I dont think they fully understandhis disorder.. I wondered what causes the sensory issues (pulling back when someone tries to hug him or gets to close to him, wearing loose fitting clothing etc.? What more can I do to help him more? thanks.
470168 tn?1237471245 s brain, would effectively change him into a different person. For some parents with severely autistic children that option may have been a blessing. Just thought I'd throw out this information for discussion.
1719131 tn?1316584213 ( So, it ***** because I can't keep track by paper but I need the options there for me.
Avatar f tn Because PDD covers such a wide spectrum of disorders and they are not all treated the same, different meds and treatments therapies work different for different disorders. For instance my son does well on abilify and in low key therapy and classroom situation. anything with too much stimulation is going to make him crack.
