Its rare but possible for a child to have bipolar disorder. If he is diagnosed with Asperger's that is a developmental disability and although those can have behavioral problems that can be severe they don't generally respond to medication like psychiatric disabilities such as bipolar or ADHD but both diagnoses can occur together. They need to provide specific diagnoses as for follow up and treatment and you should discuss this further with them.

i cant go school well. i cant stay in classroom. even i cant go to school. i always want to stay at home. i am out of my home, i quickly want to go back my house. also i smoke 3 packet cigarette in a day. also i have serious sleep disorder.
i explained my problems to my doctor. then he gave me wellbutrin and abilify combination. what do you think about it?
1 mg of Clonidine. The stipulation was to give my son 1/2 a pill of Abilify for 7 days then the full 5 mg dose for the next 7 days and we would meet with the Psychiatrist again after the two weeks. I read every bit of the side effects paper work given with the Abilify. My son after 2 doses of the 1/2 a pill of Abilify is having tremors. The paper work I was given do NOT state this as a side effect but some websites did state this was a side effect for children taking this medication.
Within 2 days of going from 90 to 120mg and abilify she has been symptom free for 10 months. She went from barely functioning to totally normal. No symptoms gastro or other for 10 months. It is amazing. It has been great. Then 4 weeks ago my 12 year old started with severe headaches, nausea and stomach aches. Which is exactly how my older one started. We already have started her on the meds. So here is exactly what my older daughter is on.

This is becoming a matter of embarrassment for him since other children do not understand and they question why he is doing it. He has asked his doctor about it and would like to know how he can stop it. I am trying to alter his diet since I have read this online as a possible cause, but actually we feel lost and would like to help him, but do not know where to start. He is on Clonidine and has been for awhile and it has not helped with the tics, for they seem to be getting worse.
He needs a significant degree of structure and hopefully his school program is a small, highly structured, self-contained classroom for children who display serious emotional and behavioral problems. He may an increase in his Abilify. By the way, I do disagree with your conclusion that he cannot obtain the help he needs in out-of-home settings. Depending on the nature of the facility, he may well require more inpatient or residential treatment help.
Hello. My bipolar son is seven, and his Depakote and lithium are not doing the job for mood swings anymore. He does not have depressive symptoms--he gets manic and hears voices when he is stressed so we also have him on a low dose of risperidone and also Abilify (which has been our miracle drug). Mood swings are getting worse and he is getting more aggressive at home (hits walls).
Your added comment makes a very significant difference. Children with autism present a challenge because you cannot take for granted that the 'tried and true' methods of normal child behavior management will be effective. In any case, it's too early to be thinking about phamacological intervention. What is required is a thorough developmental evaluation, and part of this will be a medical workup. Children only very rarely (i.e., almost never) vomit on purpose.
Abilify has been a miracle medication for both of these children. He is doing much better without ADHD meds. I never would have believed it or agreed to it if I didn't witness the difference myself. Now I wonder if he has anxiety instead of ADHD. The wrong medication can make things alot worse than they are to begin with.
As a former foster parent, I can tell you that they won't be able to find many homes that will accept this child.
My son took risperdal for a long time for his mood disorder. He was very manic without it. The side affect that concerned me was the eating. Sometimes he would eat until he vomited. Apparently, risperdal turns off the switch in the brain that signals fullness. His eating was becoming a real problem, so we asked about Abilify. He's been on that a good while, and it works. He's taking 5mg 3 times per day. It's not perfect, but it's better than the rages.
