Common Questions and Answers about Abilify autism

abilify

973741 tn?1342342773 I don't have an answer but am struggling with this same question. I posted years ago when my grandson was 7 - he is now 12 and totally out of control. I have been saying all along that it is something physical, from birth, as he had many abnormalities over the years. He had very loving and supportive parents, but never showed love, empathy or the ability to understand others' feelings. He always flew into rages and could never accept blame or responsibility.
Avatar n tn My son is extremely hyperactive. Lately it's gotten worse. He can't even keep food down, because he is all over the place afterward. He also has some serious sensory issues. He smears poop & vomit. Would Abilify help with these issues? If not, what would? We are desperate. He hasn't kept food down for 5 days. We brought him to the ER, but there was nothing they could to do, because he isn't sick. I talked to his specialist yesterday.
Avatar f tn Posted this on community forum also. My grandson who is 14 years old came home yesterday in such an emotional state. He sobbed so hard and began hitting his chest saying "No Hitting" as he looked his mom in the eyes.
Avatar f tn Abilify was just proven to treat the aggressiveness/irritability associated with autism spectrum disorders. ABA has been a Godsend for my son (he was dx as severely autistic at 26 months old, and boy oh boy have we had behavioral/aggression issues). That being said, when my son is on medication, he has weird reactions. Ibuprofen makes him crazy hyper (my daughter too). Steroids he is an absolute nightmare.
Avatar n tn We have been going through the very long process of getting an official diagnosis of Autism on our 5yr old daughter. We met with a child psychiatrist and gave us the diagnosis but also said she had OCD and prescribed Prozac for her(about 1/4 tsp every day). I am concerned about putting her on meds but also feel horrible for her and her tantrums have been unbearable (stemming from the obsessions) for our entire family.
Avatar n tn s most prescribed drug in 2013, whereas the antipsychotic aripiprazole (Abilify, Otsuka Pharmaceutical) had the highest sales, at nearly $6.5 billion, according to a new report from research firm IMS Health on the top 100 selling drugs in the United States." - Medscape - Top 100 Selling Drugs of 2013.
Avatar f tn My 8 year old son has adhd and autism. Hes not violent towards other children but is very violent towards himself. He starts occupational therapy next week and just started seeing a psychiatrist a month ago. His next appt is Thursday morning and the doctor is wanting to put him on abilify or resperdil and I was wondering if anyone has used either of these and if they helped or had any bad side effects.
Avatar m tn Our 11 yr. old son has had many diagnoses. High functioning autism, bi polar, odd, adhd, aspergers. he is on 5mg abilify and 40 mg stratera. We have had him on numerous meds, but abilify really has helped him. Stratera was just introduced in the last couple months, but we don't see much change. We home schooled him this last year due to him being agressive at school.
Avatar f tn I have had therapists do evals on him and they have ruled out autism and aspergers. They are not doctors so I have not had a complete diagnosis at this point. I feel like this is strictly a mood disorder and I recognize several of these behviors on his fathers side of the family. I'm a single mom and now my job is on the line because i've continuously had to leave work to pick him up.
16638194 tn?1449934941 I am in desperate need of some insight regarding medication for Autism and ADHD. My son is 7 years old. He started out on Risperdal when he was 4 but we quickly took him off because he quickly ballooned by 15 lbs. in 1 month. We eventually ended up on Abilify and Tenex (Guanfacine) and he's been taking that combination for about 3 years. Now we are at the point where those two meds were not working at all and we were already at the approved dosage limits.
Avatar n tn I read every bit of the side effects paper work given with the Abilify. My son after 2 doses of the 1/2 a pill of Abilify is having tremors. The paper work I was given do NOT state this as a side effect but some websites did state this was a side effect for children taking this medication. My question is are tremors a common side effect or an extreme side effect that would mean my child should not take this medication.
Avatar f tn the school did all kind of tests and he fit the autism one.
Avatar n tn Former MTV personality and model Jenny McCarthy published two books and has appeared on numerous television shows, promoting the notion that autism is caused by vaccines. She claims that vaccines caused her son’s autism and also claims that her son has been cured via chelation, diets, antifungal medication, and various other unsubstantiated therapies.
744777 tn?1235089263 For more info on sensory issues you can google the name Olga Bogdashina and read an article by her printed in Autism Today. She also has a book called Sensory and Perceptual Differences in Autism and Aspergers. Our Autism Outreach department uses the questionnaire at the back of this book to get sensory profiles on the children. I completed one for my son and found it very useful.
Avatar m tn My 3 year old daughter is due to switch from Risperdol to Abilify this week (has autism and possible schizophrenia or bipolar with hallucinations) and I am wondering what side effects you found to be most bothersome. ***Please don't comment about her age unless you are familiar with early pediatric antipsychotic use. I am well aware of how absurd it sounds and no, I am not crazy and neither is her doctor.
292592 tn?1234139424 Hi, I've wrote for advice many times and here I am again. First off, has anyone heard of a Bi-ploar child that is very good at school but very naughty at home? This is what is confusing me the most right now! My daughter is 7 years old. We have tried so many medications on her. She is currently on strattara and rispoldole. She has been out of control since being on rispodole. She was on abilify but we increased the dose 3 times and it still didn't re-control her symptoms.
Avatar f tn Regarding repeating questions, words etc - google Echolalia and Autism and also Perseverant Speech and Autism and see if that sounds like what he is doing. If it is then he probably has a speech disorder that needs to be assessed by a Speech and Language Therapist. She should assess his expressive and receptive speech as well as assess for Semantic Pragmatic Speech Disorder.
Avatar m tn I afraid send him to school because las time when he was aggressive they call 911.We try also respirdone, abilify, invega, seroquel.Nothing is working on him for long period. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Avatar m tn Between now and then, I have been diagnosed with OCD, Social anxiety disorder, GAD, major depressive disorder, ADHD, and most recently, aspergers/high functioning autism. I have also been told by a highly rated local psychiatrist that I have the worst anxiety he has ever seen. No therapist or psychologist can help, some even say out loud that I “perplex” them or to look somewhere else.
Avatar f tn Thanks for the response. The medication is Abilify. The funny thing is when I went to pick up the medication from the pharmacy it cost $580.00. That amount is making me psychotic, its just absurd, I go to a low cost clinic and she prescibes me that? I feel like she is incompetent. I just dont feel like she is working in my best inerest.
Avatar n tn My brother was diagnosed with autism and moderate mental retardation as a baby. The doctors gave him a poor prognosis, but he made dramatic and unexpected developments in childhood and adolescence. He learned to independently execute household chores, cook a plethora of meals, participate and excel in basketball, and develop an exceptional talent for video games.
Avatar f tn I am on zoloft which does not help with my anxiety, does adding abilify help with the anxiety and the depression?
Avatar f tn There is no reason you can't take Abilify with Zoloft. I take Abilify with several other medications. It started working within 2 weeks and my depression decreased dramatically. One common side effect of Abilify is akathisia, a restless need to move. I have that but added propranolol and it stopped it completely with no other side effects.
744777 tn?1235089263 He has also been diagnosed within the past 2 months with Autism (mild), Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder and ADHD-Mixed type by a Pediatric Neurologist. He is taking Zoloft 50mg and Vyvanse 30mg. When he was a baby he was slow to hit his milestones. He started talking around 8-10 months. Started walking around 18 months. He was a bed wetter until 5yrs. He's very immature for his age (plays well with kids 2 years younger then him).
Avatar n tn Lightheadedness and uncontrollable shaking are side effects of Abilify. Some other ones are weight gain, nausea and dizziness. Prozac interacts with Abilify and may increase the concentration of Abilify in your body. That may be the reason why you are experiencing the side effects. If you just started on Abilify then you should go talk to your doctor and let him know that you cannot tolerate the side effects and be put on something else.
712802 tn?1274645485 I have been on Cymbalta (30mg 2 X day) for a few weeks (about six) and my doctor gave me some Abilify samples (2mg) to try along with the Cymbalta. I have not been having irrational or psychotic thoughts, but I have been tired a lot. The hope is that the Abilify will give me some energy without side effects. I'm 57 year old male and have been on pain meds for five years due to disc issues, stenosis, severe arthritis, and fibromyalgia.
