abilify and weight gain side effects

I just was put on Abilify two weeks ago after a cold-turkey drop in my Geodon (why the Doc did it this way I don't know). I was manic as Hell and very short-tempered, verbally abusive, and impatient for about a week whichh is TOTALLY unlike me.. I'm now into week two and the side efects have lessened greatly, but they are still there to some extent. I was initially put on 10mg and after complaing to the Doc, she bumped me up to 15mg. No weight gain.

Lightheadedness and uncontrollable shaking are side effects of Abilify. Some other ones are weight gain, nausea and dizziness. When I looked up weight gain and bipolar medications, Abilify was at the bottom of the list for weight gain, Geodon people gained the least then Abilify. I'm on 2mg. of Abilify and in the begining you tend to feel sleepy, that's why they start you on it at bedtime. I would be surprised if Abilify caused a racing heart but you definately have to tell your doc about that. I was also on Wellbutrin and had to come off because it caused to much anxiety.

Abilify is a drug with a lot of side effects and not a great record of success in trials, and was approved only when all other antidepressants hadn't worked. But some have found it a useful drug to add a small amount to another drug that is working but not completely.

Only side effect I really noticed from Abilify was weight gain but this was because it made me start eating every 3 hours and become obsessed with food I guess. I take Abilify for psychotic symptoms associated with my diagnosis of schizophrenia.

after over 20 yrs. of being treated for depression, ADHD, drug and alcohol addiction i'm now being treated for rapid cycling bipolar. (2 yrs.) i've been off and on depakote,the diagnosis seems good,, i'm currently taking 2 grams a day. i do better on medication but still struggle with focus, completeing tasks, starting new projects, anxiousness, worry. the doc and i are considering adding Abilify to the Depakote. anyone out there tried it.

This is an old post, so you might want to start a new one. No, it doesn't cause thyroid problems, but all antidepressants can cause weight gain -- it's one of the most common side effects. What you're describing is a possible auto-immune disorder called Hashimoto's, but it sounds like the diagnosis isn't final yet.

They put her on Lithium and then added abilify a week later. The abilify gave her horrible side effects and I never want to see my daughter in that condition again! I detest the drug Abilify. It is a reckless drug in my opinion. I have been prescribed Lamictal now for 3 years. It is the right med for me. I am not on the floor with depression and do not gain weight. I wish some could challenge their docs.

other bipolar type problems and what people personally experienced as side-effects.. expecially weight side effects.. I really don't need to gain anymore weight. Any advice, personal experience and knowledge is welcome.

To the poster on Abilify -- you should research drugs and not just think about them because they're getting a lot of advertising. Abilify is only approved for depression when all other meds have failed. It has a high side effect profile, and is usually used for augmentation, not stand alone.

All of the current generation of anti-psychotics including Abilify can cause weight gain and have a potential to create diabetes. Abilify is the least likely but it can happen (it has to a friend of me). As well there is the potential for tardive dyskinesia. For people with straight bipolar who gain weight Lamictal is an option. If one has bipolar with psychotic features then an anti-psychotic is neccessary obviously.

My first experience with Abilify was an abnormal one (so please do not take this too seriously, as it seems I was an exception), since it threw me into a manic state; however, my Psychiatrist has come to the conclusion that I'm just wired completely different. After being weaned off the stuff for about a week, my Psychiatrist put me back on it, but a fourth of what I was taking.

soooo i switched from abilify to geodon bcuz of my weight gain does any1 take geodon??? if so how r the side effects???

My son did well on Abilify, there wasn't a huge weight gain. That came with Risperdal. That and zyprexa are the big weight gain meds.

ALSO, after 8 yrs on Abilify, had unexplained weight gain of 15-20 lbs. in spite of good diet, reg exercise. Now weaning off Abilify due to wt. gain and titrating up on Lamictal for obvious mood swings. Idk, Abilify worked well for me with Zoloft for approx 8 years. Good luck to you!

I've just had Abilify added to my cocktail of Lamictal and Clonazepam, hoping that it is going to lift me out of the current depression. Basic not wanting to get off the couch, go out, brush my teeth, talk on the phone, get out of my nightgown, and feelings of hopelessness. ( standard depression stuff ) Just, this has gone on a long, long time. I only get up, bathed and dressed if I have an appointment out of the house. Otherwise, it's me and the dog. That's it.

Yes Seroquel like all currently available antipsychotics can cause weight gain and the potential of diabetes. I did gain weight on Seroquel as I did with other antipsychotics. You could ask your doctor about a specific diet that would help you cut back sugar and carbohydrates and help reduce weight and regular exercise is essential as well.

The other atypical antipsychotics (also used as mood stabilizers) that have less of a potential of weight gain are Abilify, Fanapt and Saphris. You could ask your psychiatrist about those options. I had similar reactions to Zeldox but each person responds differently to each medication.

It does make sense to take Abilify during the day if its keeping a person awake at night as it can be activating. If not it won't make a difference as regards weight gain. Abilify is the least likely out of the antipsychotics to cause weight gain. I have posted about the antipsychotics in development that won't do this but they still are not approved medications yet. If you were diagnosed with bipolar with psychotic features you need an antipsychotic.

I'm on Lamictal (200mg) and Abilify (5mg). I've been on dozens of med combos, and this one has definitely worked the best for me. I don't notice any side effects from the Abilify, but I know a few people who get minor/more tolerable side effects, such as dry mouth... I was very assertive with my pdoc when I told him I DID NOT want to be on any medications that would cause weight gain, as I am also recovering from an ED.

I also need Seroquel to sleep decently (have been an insomniac since childhood), and it would be the perfect medication for insomnia if not for the weight gain problem. To make things worse, a few years ago I was also on Abilify. I was fat and happy for a while there. When the doctor changed & took me off the Abilify, I was astonished that I lost about 20 pounds without changing anything.
