My 8 year old son has adhd and autism. Hes not violent towards other children but is very violent towards himself. He starts occupational therapy next week and just started seeing a psychiatrist a month ago. His next appt is Thursday morning and the doctor is wanting to put him on abilify or resperdil and I was wondering if anyone has used either of these and if they helped or had any bad side effects.
There is an awful lot you can find out about your daughter and how she is affected by autism and OCD (if it is indeed OCD on top of autism, and not just rigid repeitive behaviours, or a need for rituals or routines which are commonly part of the behaviours under the umbrella of autism).
So I would also encourage you to read up about autism in general, and also specifically how it affects your daughter.

Your added comment makes a very significant difference. Children with autism present a challenge because you cannot take for granted that the 'tried and true' methods of normal child behavior management will be effective. In any case, it's too early to be thinking about phamacological intervention. What is required is a thorough developmental evaluation, and part of this will be a medical workup. Children only very rarely (i.e., almost never) vomit on purpose.
His child psychiatrist put him on Vyvanse for the ADHD, and Abilify for his sad, emotional, and often paranoid behavior. I am so concerned with his outbursts and anger. I have spoken to his doctor and he says to give the medicine time. He has been on it for four weeks and we had to increase the dose of Abilify twice. I just wish there was something better. He is such a sweet and loving boy. He is bright, and he has friends.
Abilify was just proven to treat the aggressiveness/irritability associated with autism spectrum disorders.
ABA has been a Godsend for my son (he was dx as severely autistic at 26 months old, and boy oh boy have we had behavioral/aggression issues).
That being said, when my son is on medication, he has weird reactions. Ibuprofen makes him crazy hyper (my daughter too). Steroids he is an absolute nightmare.
They are now clearly have shown a link between anti depressants (SRRI durgs) and pregnant women increase the likelyhood that a baby boy will be autistic by 300%. And I think baby girls like 60% increased risk of Autism.
It is now estimated that 23% of women I think between 40 and 50 years old are on antidepressants. Furthermore it is estimated that 10% to 13% of pregnatnt women are on antidepressants!
And we wonder why the autism rate is going through the roof!
s like a release and the defiancy comes out and always ends up getting sent to his room almost nightly and then is very apologetic but 10 minutes later back to being defiant and disrespectful. We know he tries very hard to use coping skills, but once he gets to a certain level of his anger, he doesn't know how to rationalize his thoughts whatsoever and takes things to the extreme, but always comes down off of it and is very apologetic.
Then, about 2 ½ years ago I had a near-psychotic meltdown, mostly about the devil and evil spirits, and was diagnosed with OCD and prescribed Anafranil and Zyprexa, which helped with the irrational thinking and obsessive thoughts a little. Between now and then, I have been diagnosed with OCD, Social anxiety disorder, GAD, major depressive disorder, ADHD, and most recently, aspergers/high functioning autism.
I have had therapists do evals on him and they have ruled out autism and aspergers. They are not doctors so I have not had a complete diagnosis at this point. I feel like this is strictly a mood disorder and I recognize several of these behviors on his fathers side of the family. I'm a single mom and now my job is on the line because i've continuously had to leave work to pick him up.
I am on 90 mg of Cymbalta and just started 15 mg of Abilify for depression. My doctor has titrated me up on the Abilify gradually. My question is for anyone who take 15 mg of Abilify for depression. Have you experienced any side effects? When you're depressed and trying to get your medications right it just isn't fun. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
I have only started the Abilify so far on day 3 … I was supposed to start together but I dropped the pristiq bottle and pills fell on floor now because of contamination ocd I can’t take them and insurance won’t pay for a refill yet so doctor says just take the Abilify for now , I’m noticing it is helping me to change my behavior versus the ssri just kinda helped me manage my existing behaviors but never had courage or motivation to change my behaviors so I’m hoping that’s where Abilify will come

s diagnosis(after witnessing a very big melt down my son was having at the time of the appointment). He also increased the vavanse to 50 mg and put my son on 5 mg of Abilify and continue .1 mg of Clonidine. The stipulation was to give my son 1/2 a pill of Abilify for 7 days then the full 5 mg dose for the next 7 days and we would meet with the Psychiatrist again after the two weeks. I read every bit of the side effects paper work given with the Abilify.

Are you saying you were put on Abilify before you were put on Celexa? Because if you've only been on Celexa a few days, Abilify wouldn't be appropriate. It's only a last resort medication because of its side effect profile and because it isn't known to work by itself, only in combination with another med. If, for example, you have depression, and you're on medication and its helping but not quite enough and you've tried everything else, that's what Abilify is for.

When I looked up weight gain and bipolar medications, Abilify was at the bottom of the list for weight gain, Geodon people gained the least then Abilify. I'm on 2mg. of Abilify and in the begining you tend to feel sleepy, that's why they start you on it at bedtime. I would be surprised if Abilify caused a racing heart but you definately have to tell your doc about that. I was also on Wellbutrin and had to come off because it caused to much anxiety.
