Abilify and akathisia

Common Questions and Answers about Abilify and akathisia

abilify

Avatar f tn I have been taking Wellbutrin XR, Lexapro and Klonopin (as needed.) Last year we added Abilify and the results were incredible. I came out of a very dark place, laughed, chatted, felt positive emotions and, for the first time in 15 years, felt like a "normal" person. But after a month or so I developed severe akathisia. It was so unbearable that I stopped taking Abilify. This year I moved to another state and began seeing a new psychiatrist. I decided to give Abilify another try.
3122467 tn?1342138836 It wasn't nearly as bad as you describe, but if I remember correctly it took about 3 weeks for the askasthia to go away when I started Abilify. If you haven't exhausted all other atypicals and it is over the 3 week mark, I would strongly insist on trying another antipsychotic. Ziprexa was a wonder drug for my brain. It was so quiet. Like a beautiful sandy beach. Unfortunately it didn't like my cholesterol. Spiked my triglicerides off the charts on a fairly low dose.
712802 tn?1274645485 I take Cymbalta and then I was also put on abilify shortly before my family and I went on vacation to Disneyworld and it was the worst time I ever had! I felt like I was going to jump out of my skin! I was so agitated and could not sleep. I would pace at night! I did get off abilify when I got back and am just on Cymbalta now and am better but I am experiencing things like headaches and heart palpitations so may be getting off Cymbalta, too.
Avatar f tn I take Abilify and have for more than two years. I developed akathisia, a movement disorder that stops when you stop the med. I take propranolol, which is primarily used for high blood pressure and anxiety and also takes care of akathisia. I have no other side effects from Abilify. It has worked well for me in dealing with depression.
Avatar f tn My pdoc is adding Abilify at bedtime, and I am quite apprehensive about this combination. Can anyone shed any light on this or have any experience with it? I want to get well! Thank you, and may you all be well.
1700643 tn?1464846682 I take an AD along with Abilify. Within a week after Abilify was added I started to feel better. Right now I take 15 mg but I have taken as much as 30mg. I did get akathisia from it (restlessness ) but added propranolol which stopped it. Akathisia is a common side effect.
Avatar m tn i just want toh think everybody that help me with my question . i took abilify before and it didnt do anything . now this time i can sleep, but when i walk up to used the bathroo m i never make it in time. do you think is a side effect of the medicine .
Avatar m tn The other commonly used options are Benadryl, Symmetryl and beta blockers such as Inderal and Atenolol. Those are the ones I am familiar with and have tried but all this should be discussed with a doctor as they are all effective in different ways and have different side effect profiles.
2010625 tn?1329372056 I have akathisia from Abilify but it works for me most of the time so I didn't want to go off it. My pdoc added propranolol, a beta blocker, 60mg a day, that stopped the akathisia almost completely. Propranolol is actually mainly for high blood pressure but has "side effects" that takes care of akathisia and anxiety. The only problem I have from it is orthostatic hypotension (dizziness upon standing) but all I have to do is stop and lean over for a few seconds and it passes.
Avatar f tn What's akathisia?
Avatar f tn She said that a lot of people are able to manage their Bipolar with Abilify alone- if they tolerate it. I was happy to give it a try, but I quickly developed severe akathisia, or what I called 'itchy muscles'. It was just uncomfortable. Not everyone who takes Abilify gets it, though.
Avatar n tn I developed severe akathisia after taking Seroquel, Risperdal and Prozac- we are not sure of which one was the offender- docs think most likely it was the risperdal however prozac was initiated around the same time. I was on seroquel many years without any difficulty. The seroquel and risperdal were given for sleeping problems and the prozac for anxiety.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with tardive akathisia (an inner restlessness in your entire body that is there 24/7) 3 years ago, caused by Abilify. I no longer take any meds in that class of drugs but the akathisia persists and I was told by my doctor that it's probably permanent. It feels like torture 24/7. I have tried everything from benadryl to beta blockers to hydrocodone and nothing has worked except 10mg diazepam 3-4 times daily, with the fourth dose being used only if I desperately need it.
2010625 tn?1329372056 Different people has different side effects. I take Abilify (its not Ambilify) and it hasn't caused any weight gain and helps with depression. Abilify has caused me to have akathisia (restless movements of legs/feet). I take propranolol for it and found that it also is used for anxiety without being a benzo. It is a beta blocker which is primarily used to lower blood pressure.
Avatar f tn I have been having this very annoying and scary behavior for the past few days. It all started with me waking up in the middle of the night and as I was trying to fall back asleep, there were words and visions (sometimes scary) just constantly flashing in my head and racing. I don't hear anything. It's just thoughts. Ever since then, when I watch TV, I repeat in my head everything they say.
Avatar n tn I know most cases of akathisia remit after the medication is stopped, but i have found in research some cases of akathisia can last over 2 years- which is horrible. I am seeing a movement disorders specialist and she thinks it is akathisia, not TD, becuase we can't visibly see the muscle spasms that I feel- it is all internal. She said in TD one would see it on the outside.
Avatar n tn I have tardive dyskinesia and have taken Klonopin for 10 years and it actually treats it. Have a detailed conversation with your psychiatrist and if they think anything is of concern and if they diagnose that it is treatable (a neurologist who is a movement disorders specialist would follow up) and I could give you more information then.
Avatar n tn m a clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist), he faces a complex history that includes severe traumatic brain injury, probable prior history of Bipolar II disorder, sleep walking and sleep eating, insomnia and frequent wakening, and akathisia. He is on Lexapro and no anticonvulsant or other mood stabilizer. I don't know whether to consider his akathisia as resulting from his TBI or Lexapro or mania or ... Anyone with ideas, write to me at ***@**** Thank you.
Avatar m tn Pardon my asking, but how much do you know about akathisia? I have asked several experts and their info is slightly better than limited. As a matter of fact, while in the ER, the physician treating my condition didn't even recognize what was happening. She said my response was normal (as I was crawling under the table trying to find relief, explaining the incredible sense of doom I felt about 15 minutes after the inapsine injection). Who can I turn to for help?
Avatar m tn I am on 90 mg of Cymbalta and just started 15 mg of Abilify for depression. My doctor has titrated me up on the Abilify gradually. My question is for anyone who take 15 mg of Abilify for depression. Have you experienced any side effects? When you're depressed and trying to get your medications right it just isn't fun. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Avatar f tn I have only started the Abilify so far on day 3 … I was supposed to start together but I dropped the pristiq bottle and pills fell on floor now because of contamination ocd I can’t take them and insurance won’t pay for a refill yet so doctor says just take the Abilify for now , I’m noticing it is helping me to change my behavior versus the ssri just kinda helped me manage my existing behaviors but never had courage or motivation to change my behaviors so I’m hoping that’s where Abilify will come
