Avatar n tn 7 Any of these things can lead to the cause of death. Patients with IPF can die from heart failure, respiratory failure, or collapsed lungs.
Avatar f tn These complications result from portal hypertension and/or from liver insufficiency. The survival of both stages is markedly different with compensated patients having a median survival time of over 12 years compared to decompensated patients who survive less than 2 years (1, 3). It has also been shown that both stages have different predictors of death (1).
Avatar f tn The clinical course of pulmonary MAC infection in patients without HIV infection is usually indolent. In one study, approximately 50% of patients in one study were alive 5 years after diagnosis. Untreated patients with significant lung disease may develop respiratory insufficiency or weight loss. So, for relief from symptoms she can use expectorants and steam inhalations to help clear the secretions. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn Liver problems (rarely, liver function worsens) including an increased chance of liver failure in patients with cirrhosis. Patients with both the hepatitis C virus and HIV have an increased chance of liver failure during PEGASYS treatment. Change in a blood test that measures liver inflammation occurs more often in patients with hepatitis B. If you have a rise in this blood test you may need to be watched more closely with additional blood tests.
Avatar n tn I thought there were only 4 stages of liver disease, not 6. Anyone know what the pathology report cirrhosis stage 6/6 might mean? Thank you.
Avatar n tn There was a presentation by lead author Michael Shiffman at the 2009 EASL meeting about a followup that was done on 200+ patients with biopsies done at baseline and then again 5-6 years later. It was found that many HCV patients who had cured the virus could reverse their liver scarring (fibrosis). Even patients with cirrhosis reversed the damage. 10% of patients with cirrhosis completely repaired their livers.
Avatar f tn Cirrhosis, in particular the development of portal hypertension, is responsible for the clinical manifestations of chronic liver disease, although it is heterogeneous both histologically and clinically, and one of the flaws of current histological scoring systems is that cirrhosis is represented as one or at most two stages. Clinically Patients with cirrhosis may be symptomatic or near death.
Avatar f tn I'm living it right now and to be honest, I am aware of 5 to 7 steps or stages of the grief process, but they don't matter, because you survive one day at a time ....baby steps, and not time frame, since everyone heals at their own pace. It's been 2 years for me and I do feel better, but I am not yet completely healed...it takes a long time.
878236 tn?1240344901 Coinfection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) is not uncommon, particularly because of similar routes of infection. In HBV-infected patients, the rate of HCV coinfection ranges from 10% to 30%.[1] Patients who are coinfected have various serologic and virologic profiles and a diverse spectrum of disease.
Avatar f tn I just went in for a transvaginal ultrasound yesterday (11/10) and the tech told me that I was 5 weeks and 5 days. She said she could see the sac and the yolk sac, but no baby yet. She told me this is normal and that the doctor will schedule me for another one in about 1.5 weeks (she did). I am worried and scared to death. I'm 24 and both my husband and I are very excited about having our first child. Please help put my mind at ease. Thank you in advance for any replies.

Avatar f tn Hi, I received good replies back about the 2 different scales that measure the biopsy results. However, are these stages of cirrohsis? I'm not sure I understand this part yet. I am preparing for tx and am quite apprehensive about the whole thing. I stll have to get documentation of contraceptives then I can start tx.They recommended Mirena (IUD) because it involves only 1 hormone. My insurance does not cover it so if I do not want to afford $900.00 I can take the deprovera injection.
803751 tn?1238180989 While a few different systems are used, by the descriptive language you use, it appears that he's now stage 3 in a 4 stage system where stage 4 is cirrhosis. In general, Hepatitis C is fairly slow moving but not in all cases. Also, you should understand that biopsy staging can be off by as much as two stages due to sample size, relative sample size and pathologist bias. .
Avatar m tn Please keep in mind that this varies according to the location of the metastisis. I personally know of survivors of many years with mets to the bone. It would also depend on your Mother's general health and what treatment will be prescribed. Another point is that all the lumps you describe in your Mother's breasts may not be cancerous; it would only take one malignant lump to cause the metastisis. Kindest regards ....
Avatar f tn My father is in the final stages of dementia. He can no longer hold anything or walk. He quit speaking about 4 years ago. I just was recently told that he no longer chews. This has been for about 6 weeks. His food is thickened so he can swallow it. He has lost about 20 pounds in 5 months. His albumin level is 2.7, and 2.5 is sometimes the criteria for hospice care. My question is, how much longer before he loses his ability to swallow?
Avatar f tn I think there are different stages of addiction..the early stages which are most easily broken and then the last stages where one has to do or die. Actually as i type I realize that one always has to do or die because if one does not stop in the early stages it can progress to a much more difficult time and a more difficult recovery.

Avatar m tn 201) and, among progressors, mean ΔF/year was 0.212 ± 0.66 in patients with F0 and 0.266 ± 0.91 in those with F1 (P = ns). However a ΔF of 3 stages as well as progression to F3 or to F4 (cirrhosis) were observed only in patients with F1 in the initial biopsy. Overall, fibrosis progression was observed in 13 of 27 cases with F0 (48.1%, including 5 to F1 and 8 to F2) and in 51 of 79 with F1 (64.5%, including 22 to F2, 16 to F3 and 13 to F4).

Edema typical manifests itself in patients with advanced liver disease as ascites (abdominal fluid) or fluid in the lower extremities, legs and feet.
